Only the Young sings 'Come On Eileen' on The X Factor UK 2014 (VIDEO)
Only the Young sang 'Come On Eileen' on The X Factor UK 2014 Live Show 2 on October 18, 2014.
Pre-performance: The group is absolutely mortified to learn that Louis has chosen "Come On Eileen" for them, and have scoured the internet trying to find literally anything else to sing. Well, at least they're trying to enact some agency over their own journey in this competition. Hell, they need to, given how cheesy last week was, for a lot of viewers. I think they could go far, but only if they illustrate their relevance, and I'm not sure "Come On Eileen" is the right song for that. Unfortunately, they end up agreeing to do the song anyway.
Nick's Thoughts: To be fair, they do a pretty good job with it, making it sound distinct from the original. I don't think it'll chart on iTunes or anything, but it's an interesting performance, and certainly memorable. Hell, they have two skateboarders on half-pipes behind them, and while some might find that distracting, I thought it actually added a bit to the youthful, vibrant feeling that Only the Young needs to cultivate. Still a terrible song choice, but that's just what Louis does, more often than not.
Judges: Mel B says the group got it "so right" tonight, saying she's finally beginning to see why Only the Young is her favorite act of the competition. Cheryl is less enthusiastic, saying she felt the song choice was like something you sing in a rowdy bar, not in a singing competition. Simon disagrees with Cheryl, saying that they have great chemistry as a group, and improving over last week. Louis thinks they did a great job with the song, and pleads with the audience to vote for them. I like these guys (and girls), and hope they manage to make it through to next week. I just think the competition would be more boring without them.
