'X-Men' Spinoff Movie 'Deadpool' Gets Release Date
The latest X-Men spinoff isn't another Wolverine adventure, but rather a story centered on another fan favorite: mercenary Wade Wilson, the Marvel character better known as the fourth wall-breaking Deadpool. Even better is that the film, which has been rumored to be in development for years, finally has a release date.
FOX and Marvel have scheduled Deadpool for Feb. 12, 2016. Tim Miller (visual effects artist and co-founder of Blur Studio) will direct the film alongside producers Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: First Class) and Marvel's Kevin Feige.
Deadpool, created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Rob Liefeld in 1991, was notably played by Ryan Reynolds in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and although Reynolds has been expected to return to the role, no deal has been confirmed just yet. The interpretation of the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was fairly divisive at the time, as many felt the character was turned from the witty, sarcastic guy everyone liked into a self-serious pseudo-monster who didn't even look all that much like his comic book counterpart, if at all.
Hopefully, the movie will land a bit closer to who the Deadpool character is, as there's tons of potential for Deadpool to become a major franchise for both FOX and Marvel. If nothing else, the infamous leaked test footage for the movie (embedded below), suggests that the film is in good hands.
