Writers Guild of America Television Awards 2015 Nominations - Full List

The nominees are in for the television categories at the Writers Guild of America Awards 2015. HBO's True Detective and FX's Louie are at the top of the heap, although this year's omissions were nearly as notable as the inclusions. Although huge series such as Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and Mad Men made the cut, former favorites such as Homeland, and critically-acclaimed newcomers such as Fargo, were left out altogether. This latter omission caused a particular stir, as FX released a statement about the Fargo snub, calling out the WGA and blaming its dodgy categorization for the exclusion.

“When the WGA Award nominations were announced this morning, several news outlets commented about the notable omission of FX’s award-winning miniseries Fargo," the statement reads. "The network initially submitted Fargo in the longform category based on the fact that the 10 one-hour scripts – all written by Noah Hawley – tell a single, close-ended story and therefore Fargo is a miniseries. The WGA does not recognize Fargo as a miniseries because Noah Hawley was accorded a ‘Created for Television By’ credit and said that Fargo could only be considered in the drama series category. Fargo won the Emmy Award this year for Outstanding Miniseries. It has been submitted as a miniseries for this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Since Fargo is not in fact a drama series, and it is in fact a miniseries, FX made the decision not to submit Noah Hawley and his brilliant scripts for WGA Awards consideration.”

Every year has controversial omissions from the ballot, such that I wonder if maybe the WGA should think about loosening up its restrictions. Then again, I'm not sure their requirements are necessarily impossible to meet, so long as you know the guidelines, going in. Either way, FX really ought to have submitted Fargo anyway, since it likely would have earned Noah Hawley a well-deserved nomination. But I guess that'll have to wait until next year now.
