Writers Guild of America Awards 2013 - Film Nominations
The Writers Guild of America has made its choices for 2013, and there are some controversial omissions, due to the strict nature of the WGA guidelines. Oscar frontrunners 12 Years a Slave, Philomena, Fruitvale Station and Rush were not eligible, which narrowed the field considerably. Yet there were even surprise omissions among those that were eligible. Gravity and Inside Llewyn Davis missed the cut, as did Enough Said and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Of course, I wouldn't go cursing any of their Oscar prospects just yet, given that this is something that happens nearly every year, with Oscar frontrunners missing out on WGA nominations due to some quirky technicality. With that said, I'm not sure what the excuse is in the documentary category, where only two of the 15 remaining Oscar finalists earned nominations here: Dirty Wars and Stories We Tell. I'm genuinely puzzled, but at the very least, this should make the Oscar race a bit more interesting, as different contenders step up to the plate.
