Women's Triathlon - London 2012 Olympics - Medal Results

After almost two hours of racing the Women's Triathlon came down to a photo finish.   Read on for all your London 2012 Olympic medal results.

The Triathlon, which first became an Olympic sport in 2000, consists of a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10k run.  Triathlon probably first came into public awareness as the "Ironman" competition, which is a much longer version of the same event.

Americans Bennett & Groff were looking good entering the run in fifth and seventh place respectively.  Bennett faded back into the chase pack fairly early on, but Groff hung in there all the way until the end, ultimately finishing in fourth place.  Pre-race favorite, Jenkins of Team GB finished in fifth.

The story of the race however, was the sprint to the finish by Spirig and Norden.  It looked like Spirig had it in the bag with just a few meters to go, but Norden surged forward and the two crossed the line in a dead heat, both receiving a final time of 1:59:48.

After a review by the judges, the gold medal was awarded to Spirig and the silver to Norden.  What an exciting finish!  A heart breaker for Norden, but what a tremendous effort by both athletes.

Results:

Gold: Nicola Spirig - Switzerland

Silver: Lisa Norden - Sweden

Bronze: Erin Densham - Australia

Congratulations to all the medalists!
