Whoopi Goldberg is headed back to the big screen. In addition to her role in upcoming feature films Big Stone Gape and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Goldberg will star in and executive produce The Christmas Pearl, an indie drama centered on a ghost.
The film tells the story of the 93-year-old matriarch of a South Carolina family that has gotten together for an incredibly tense Christmas holiday in the family home. When her usual maid gets called away, "a Christmas miracle presents itself as Pearl, the maid to the matriarch’s grandmother, who comes back to the family as a ghost."
So...um...yeah. Anyway...
Production is scheduled to begin in June in New York City and South Carolina with TV director Felix Alcala from a script by writer Anne Rapp, based on the novel of the same name by Dorothea Benton Frank novel.
Not crazy about the premise, but I'd be lying if I said that Whoopi Goldberg was anything less than one of my favorite actresses on Earth. Seriously, The Color Purple and Ghost are endlessly watchable simply because of her. So I don't really doubt her ability to elevate just about anything.
