After coming out as gay last month, actor Wentworth Miller has gone to great lengths to open up about his past, and the hardships he faced prior to coming out.

At a Human Rights Campaign gala Saturday, Miller revealed he had tried to kill himself as a teenager.

“The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15,” Miller states in the speech, a video of which was obtained by TMZ. “I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills. I don’t remember what happened over the next couple days, but I’m pretty sure come Monday morning I was on a bus back to school pretending everything was fine. And when someone asked me if that was a cry for help, I say no, because I told no one.”

The former Prison Break star came out publicly in a letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in August, declining their invitation because of Russia’s anti-gay laws. “As a gay man, I must decline,” Miller wrote in his letter. “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

During the speech, Miller goes on to express his regret at not coming out sooner. “I had multiple opportunities to speak my truth, which was that I was gay,” he said. “But I chose not to. I was out in private, to family and friends … but professionally, publicly, I was not.”
