Weeds - Season 8 Episode 11 - Recap and Review - God Willing and the Creek Don't Rise
The very special 100th episode of Showtime's inaugural hit , Weeds, gave fans a moment they've been waiting for since the very first season. It didn't happen quite as we had expected it to, but in pure Weeds fashion, it delivered just as it was meant to. "God Willing and the Creek Don't Rise" began as a happy return to Regrestic, the new Agrestic, and ended as an emotional reminder of where our Botwins have been and what they have come to.
"Hi!" Nancy (Mary Louise Parker) showed up at Conrad's (Romany Malco) front door like she hadn't seen him in, oh, about a day. Meanwhile, it's been several years since the former lovebirds have done this dance. Unfortunately for Nancy, this Conrad is reformed. He's been out of the weed game for a while and is, instead, working in the health field creating cleanses. Even more unfortunate for Nancy, Conrad is about to tie the knot!
Right off the bat, it became clear to us that they were going to squeeze in every cameo they could during this trip back. Because this is the final season, and they knew going into filming that it was, this felt like the right thing to do. We got quick glances of Nancy's former housekeeper, Lupita (Renée Victor) and Pam (Becky Thyre), Celia's lovably halfwitted former sidekick. The two were a refreshing sight for sore eyes after the years surrounding the Mexican drug cartel plot line and the dark aftermath that followed in its wake. Pam just thought she hadn't seen Nancy because she and Celia had become "too cliquey." She felt like it had been almost a year since she'd last seen Nancy. Oh, Pam. We missed you!

For the Botwin boys, though, run-ins with their former flames proved heavier. Andy (Justin Kirke) took the return to Agrestic territory as a sign from the universe that he was meant to end up with Yael Hoffman (Meital Dohan), his former rabbinical teacher whom he spent around an entire season dating. Andy showed up at her office puffed up and ready to reconnect. Andy's vision was quickly deflated, though, and the situation blew up in his face. Yael couldn't even remember him. Honestly, this moment was meant to be a pie-in-the-face sort of jab at Andy's expense for getting ahead of himself. The joke was supposed to be that Andy was deemed, yet again, unremarkable. To me, it just made Yael look like a jackass. Then again, I never really liked her anyway. The trauma sent Andy into the deepest existential crisis we've ever seen from him. It started off comical, as usual, but ended on a different note at the episode's close.
Silas (Hunter Parrish) arrived in Agrestic assuming there was nothing left for him there but unfulfilling memories of the past. Once Megan (Shoshannah Stern) had left for Princeton, he had nothing keeping him there. A Moment that backfired for Andy ended up being an unexpected revelation for Silas. After bumping into Megan at work, it was as though the emotional floodgates on Silas opened following several seasons of brooding and bottling-up. It was kind of nostalgic to see Silas struggle with sign language again. She is the only girl he's ever loved, and although we never really thought too much about this as viewers, this makes perfect sense. He admitted to poking holes in condoms in order to get her pregnant. He apologized, and she got upset for a moment before giving in to him. Maybe this is the best way to tie up Silas' storyline. Remember when she was just "the deaf girl on Dewey Street"?

At a wedding waltz lesson with Conrad, Nancy mad a last ditch attempt at selling her plan. Conrad, however, put a halt to things pretty quickly. Guillermo (Guillermo Diaz) is back in business. He "owns" the new Agrestic, and Nancy needs to go through him if she wants to use the land she'd purchased for growing. After showing up at some sort of birthday party at the park, Nancy attempted to make nice with Guillermo. This is the Guillermo who we last saw ready to kill Nancy. He got out of prison based off of bad evidence, sloppy police form, and such. This new Nancy, though. She seems like she's even more fearless and she's already been shot in the head once.
Guillermo was ready to put an end to her right there in the park, but Nancy seemed convinced they could make nice. Guillermo reminded her, however, that they aren't the same people anymore. Doing a "brick dance" isn't going to save Nancy this time. Luckily, Conrad showed up just before Nancy got another bullet to the head. He wants in. Nancy's plan makes sense. Legalized marijuana is the future. She offered Guillermo a promotion from thug to board member, and he ended up interested as well.
Doug (Kevin Nealon) and Shane (Alexander Gould) held up the fort back in Connecticut. It must have sucked to not get the chance to be a part of the return to Agrestic. Fans have been waiting for this for a while. In a nutshell, Doug found out that starting his own religion/ cult would offer him even more government benefits than running a homeless shelter. This time, though, he enlisted his team of hobos to help out. He was inspired by his friend "from the future," a homeless man who later admitted to having multiple personalities borderline personality disorder. Can Doug be a good person?
Shane spent the episode attempting to get out of his arrest. The internal affairs officers offered him two options. He could suffer the consequences or he could rat out Mitch Ouellette (Michael Harney), the officer who had offered Shane and his family a break after discovering their grow business last season. He's also the man behind the crooked impound lot scheme. After giving Shane a tough time and aggressively pressuring him not to snitch, Shane seemed ready to blow. On camera, we watched Shane slam Oulette before slamming the force as well. He didn't cave, though. Just before quitting, Ouelette admitted to setting Shane up in a test of loyalty. He passed and the charges were erased!
Lupita: "This is the woman who stole my youth."
It seemed as though everybody had a somebody by the end of this episode. That is, save for Andy and Nancy. Silas reintroduced Megan to Nancy, who slipped Silas the seeds she managed to finagle. Megan was clueless. She doesn't know he's a grower! Things sure have changed since season one! Conrad seemed itching to start up the growing game again since the episode's start. Do they really think this plan is going to work?
Nancy: "God willing, and the creek don't rise!"
Conrad: "The creek. She always rises."
Writing a marriage in for Conrad was a great way to write out a romance opportunity between he and Nancy. With only one episode yet, the series needed to address the big romance question mark. Will Andy and Nancy end up together or will he finally break free of her and this life? After getting wasted drunk, the two ended up at the spot where Nancy's husband Judah dropped dead on a run with Shane. They had been avoiding that spot for years. At that moment, Andy realized that he found Nancy and her boys while he was theoretically "lost in the wilderness" and, in a sense, he still is very much lost. He needs to leave.
Knowing this time was different, Nancy gave in to Andy and the two finally sealed the deal. The scene was dark and dirty. It was a stark contrast to the comedic sex scenes we're accustomed to seeing Andy in. There was passion in it. After having sex on the spot where Judah died, Andy left in a panicked huff, while Nancy kneeled screaming for him to come back to her. Was that all Andy really needed?
