Weeds - Season 8 Episode 10 - Recap and Review - Threshold
If Weeds were to ever attempt to take things back to basics, any loyal viewer of the show would know that eventually that road would lead back to Agrestic. In "Threshold," the Botwins found themselves each in a set of unfortunate circumstances that lead into next week's special 100th episode and thus, back home to Agrestic.
The episode opened with Silas (Hunter Parrish) and Nancy (Mary Louise Parker) setting up LaPlante Industries, a cover company for their new growing business. Silas had intended on naming the company Silation Productions because, of course, that's what he does best.
Silas: "I silate the sh*t out of them. Only, after they've been laplanted."
The southern tobacco plantation funding the underground growing had already deposited $350,000 upon their arrival. When the Botwin's eyes light up like they did when they heard that figure read out loud, you know something diabolical is brewing in their brains.
Things also heated up, for a while at least, between Rabbi Dave (David Julian Hirsh) and Nancy. After exploring picnic blanket sex in the park, it seemed like the two were getting closer. That is, until Nancy whipped out the prosciutto. Prosciutto has to be the least kosher thing ever. Rabbi Dave isn't supposed to be with a non-Jew but he argued that they could figure it out as they went. He decided to invite Nancy to Shabbat dinner with his friends. Nancy Botwin doesn't do well with new groups of people, and taking her to a Shabbat dinner is an awful idea.
Meanwhile, Andy (Justin Kirke) arrived home with his new bride, Jo. It seems that on the car ride home, Andy started having second thoughts. By the end of the episode, of course, he was in full blown runaway groom mode. As it turns out, Jo is barely twenty-two and social networking obsessed. Andy may have his tremendous commitment issues, but his saving grace is that he loves exploring and meeting people. One hundred and forty characters or less is hell for Andy Botwin. Marrying someone who considers updating her status on Facebook to "married" as consummating that marriage was a massive mistake.

Nancy: "Do I look kosher?"
Silas came to Nancy with a business plan to invest some of the money in grow materials. Nancy, focused on which shoes in her closet were most kosher, shot down his ideas instantaneously. Silas had wanted to clone the seedlings he cultivated professionally for the medicinal marijuana company he and Nancy have been working for. His plan was to use the same perfected strain in his illegal work. No plot Silas could ever concoct could top a Nancy scheme, and he knows it. She just needs some time to figure out how to "invest" the $350k.
Shane (Alexander Gould) and his girlfriend Angela managed to find the formerly impounded sports car Shane foolishly lost to thugs in last week's episode. After discovering the same duo exchanging BJ's in the front seat, Angela's taser did a fine job of securing the vehicle again. That is, until Ice Pick's girlfriend showed up. Ice Pick's girlfriend also turned out to be the thug who jacked the car's girlfriend and somehow, amidst the back alley drama, a brick ended up smashing the windshield of the car Shane is responsible for. Did you follow all of that? With his head stuck out the driver's window, Shane attempted to speed the car back to where it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, he got pulled over by a fellow officer in the process.
Meeting Jo's roommates looked like absolute, mind-numbing torture for Andy. I'm not sure Andy has ever met anyone, over the course of eight seasons, who neglected to fall for the charm of his travel stories. That's Andy Botwin's best card to play, and it lost out to tweeting.
Andy: "So brief. Why tell a full story?!.."
Before Andy died of disappointment, the roomies invited him to a party. It was, however, an 80's party featuring everything the 80's were about, day-glo and bad music. Ugh! Andy looked appalled. Get this marriage annulled, Andy! In private, Andy questioned Jo about why she would marry him. The last straw seemed to be that she didn't want kids for a "bajillion" years. She married Andy because she thought it would be fun, and he reminds her of her father. That was like taking a bullet.

Doug (Kevin Nealon) seems to have found his calling! I didn't see his plot going in this direction for the season but I hope his arc continues along this path. Doug seems to be embracing his role as the leader of a homeless shelter. Only, now it seems as though Doug is kicking things up a notch. Just a few weeks ago he was setting up this charity for a tax break. Now, he's booking hotel rooms and holding group meetings. He even invited a hotel worker with "sad eyes," Monica, to join in on the group therapy. Also, we can still count on the few minutes an episode Doug is on the screen to deliver one one-liner after another.
Shabbat dinner was as awkward as we hoped it would be. We were right there with Nancy as the group of couples discussed life in the fast-paced world of their suburban Jewish community. Nancy clung to her wine glass as a security blanket like any clever human being would do. She's been trying to stay positive since surviving the shooting, though. At first, it seemed like Nancy was fighting through the uncomfortable awkwardness to make a place for herself amongst Dave's friends, but after stumbling across a picture of Dave and his dead wife on the fridge, things changed. It's only been fifteen months, and she knows Dave isn't really ready to date. It seemed as though she truly broke things off for his benefit; however, Nancy Botwin is nobody's rebound, even if she was empathetic to Dave on this occasion. After all, this show started as a show about a suburban pot-dealing widow. He pleaded with her to stay, even after she confessed that she was a non-Jewish pot dealer.
Silas got caught stealing his seedlings from his office. He tried to lie his way out of it but failed. As a favor, his boss didn't report his theft to the authorities but kept the seeds and fired Silas. At home, Silas and Andy vented to one another about their day of missteps. Nancy joined the pity party after stumbling upon Jo taking a bubble bath in her tub. Jo has gone from fantastic to absolutely awful faster than any other character this series has churned out. Mazel Tov, Andy! Afterwards, Andy went upstairs to masturbate. He googled pictures of Yael, the rabbi teacher he should have married. Funny thing; I believe they actually used screen caps from the show as her google image portfolio! Jo slept in the bed, directly next to Andy's computer.
Nancy Botwin finally had her revelation! After confessing that she opened up to Rabbi Dave about being a pot-dealing mom, Silas chimed in with some words of wisdom. She's no longer a weed dealer. She works odd jobs in and around marijuana, but that entirely defeats the purpose of working with weed. Nancy Botwin doesn't even smoke pot! In that case, why not just work a regular job in marketing or sales?
Nancy: "Eff that."
It's time to get back to straight-up dealing weed!
Nancy finally came up with her final season master scheme. She planned on investing the $350,000 in a glorious dispensary. Rather than the bleak and sterile places people are used to, she plans on opening the "Starbucks" of weed dealerships. Silas relented. It's really not a bad idea.
What did you think of this week's episode? Are you excited for the 100th episode and the return to Agrestic? Are you thrilled to see Conrad and Guillermo popping up again? Where is Celia Hodes?! How will Weeds end?
