Viola Davis Reportedly Cast as Amanda Waller in 'Suicide Squad'
Viola Davis is headed to the DC Universe in a huge role.
According to inside sources, Oscar nominee and How To Get Away With Murder star Viola Davis has won the role of DC Comics villain Amanda Waller in the hotly-anticipated Suicide Squad movie from End of Watch director David Ayer. Waller is "a former congressional aide and government agent often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former supervillains working in return for amnesty."
In order for her to accept the part, Ayer and the studio had to work around her TV schedule, as How to Get Away With Murder is a pretty huge hit for Davis to walk away from, even for a short length of time. But this movie has the potential to be even bigger, as she'd join a cast that includes Jared Leto as the Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
If true, this is pretty great casting. In fact, Suicide Squad has been one of the best-cast comic book movies in recent memory, between Leto, Robbie and Hardy. I'm excited to see how this will turn out, since a movie centered on an all-star team of supervillains might be a bit of a hard sell to casual moviegoers. Should be interesting to watch this project come together.
