VIDEO: Steve Carrell and Channing Tatum Seek Oscar With 'Foxcatcher'
"I am a patriot. I want to see this country soar again."
And with that, we're off to the Oscar races for 2014. Intended for release last year, Bennett Miller's drama Foxcatcher has just premiered to rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival, with Steve Carrell and Channing Tatum receiving the early hints on Oscar buzz, particularly for Carrell, who very well could find himself walking up to the podium this time next spring. In fact, I'm going to call it now, because hey, might as well get on the bandwagon early. And also because, from this one minute trailer alone, I think this is the kind of performance that will carry the entire awards season.
The film itself is the true story of Mark Schultz and Dave Schultz (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo), Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers whose peculiar relationship with the unhinged John du Pont (Steve Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune, leads to a horrific murder that will change their lives forever. It doesn't sound like traditional Oscar bait, but then, neither did Bennett Miller's previous two films, Moneyball and Capote. And both went on to be nominated for Best Picture, in addition to earning multiple acting nominations. The film, which co-stars Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave and Anthony Michael Hall, hits theaters on November 14th.
