VIDEO: 'Pacific Rim 2' Announced for April 7, 2017 Release
After a solid but not overwhelmingly strong performance at the domestic office, there was question of whether Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim would manage to get the sequel its creator so clearly wanted. Well, thanks to strong box office overseas, particularly in China, the robots-vs-interdimensional aliens saga will be getting another go-around on the big screen.
Del Toro has confirmed that Pacific Rim 2 will hit theaters on April 7, 2017, along with an animated series based on the Pacific Rim comic book series that started with Tales From Year Zero. Pacific Rim 2 will be filmed for 3D and IMAX formats, and will be written by del Toro, Zak Penn (who co-wrote the story for The Avengers with Joss Whedon), and original screenwriter Travis Beacham.
“The characters I love will return,” said del Toro, in an interview with BuzzFeed. “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
As someone who loved the first film and wishes it had been more successful, this is great news. But what do you think? Are you up for Pacific Rim 2? Sound off in the comments! And check out the full video of del Toro making the announcement of the sequel and animated series below:
