VH1 Cancels 'Single Ladies' After Three Seasons
Well, it looks like all the single ladies will be leaving the metaphorical club we call VH1.
The network has canceled Single Ladies after three seasons. The series, which started out as a TV movie on the network, was VH1's first original, scripted series. Its success paved the way for subsequent shows such as last summer's surprise hit, Hit the Floor, and the upcoming drama Hindsight. But the show, from Queen Latifah‘s Flavor Unit, will not come to an end on March 24, as its season finale has now become its series finale.
“We’ve been proud to deliver three seasons of the drama, romance and style that engaged viewers in each episode of Single Ladies,” VH1 said in a statement to Deadline. “Although we’ve decided not to move forward with another season, we hope to work again with the talented cast, creatives and producers as well as our partners at Flavor Unit Entertainment in the near future. We also thank the show’s fans for their support since the premiere in 2011.”
What's surprising about this news is that Single Ladies is still a solid ratings performer. The third season premiere brought in 2.6 million viewers. When you factor in the premiere airing and its same night encore together, Single Ladies grew with each season: 2.9 million (Season 1), 3.2 million (Season 2), and 3.5 million (Season 3). However, the show did suffer from some behind-the-scenes turmoil, as creator/executive producer Stacy A. Littlejohn left the series shortly after a third season was picked up in the summer of 2012. This led to a delay of well over a year, with Season 3 only just premiering in January. Perhaps the project cost more money than it was worth? Either way, it'll be a bittersweet farewell for the show that served as the foundation upon which VH1 built its original programming schedule.
So what do you think? Did Single Ladies run just long enough? Or has VH1 made a mistake in canceling the series? Sound off in the comments!
