USC Scripter Awards 2014 - Full Nominees

The USC Scripter Awards 2014 not only honors the best in films adapted from preexisting source material, but it also rewards both the screenwriter and the writer behind the original work being adapted. This makes it one of the more unique awards ceremonies of the season each year. This year will be no different, as the nominees offer some fairly big surprises, such as the nominations of The Spectacular Now and What Maisie Knew, two films that are just now putting their stamp on the Oscar season.

So which script adaptations were nominated along with their original works? Check out the full list of nominees below:

"Captain Phillips"
Screenplay: Billy Ray
Source: Non-fiction book "A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea" by Richard Phillips and Stephen Talty

"Philomena"
Screenplay: Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope
Source: Non-fiction book "The Lost Child of Philomena Lee" by Martin Sixsmith

"The Spectacular Now"
Screenplay: Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber
Source: Novel by Tim Tharp

"12 Years a Slave"
Screenplay: John Ridley
Source: Non-fiction book by Solomon Northup

"What Maisie Knew"
Screenplay: Carroll Cartwright and Nancy Doyne
Source: Novel by Henry James

Notably omissions include probable Oscar contender The Wolf of Wall Street, adapted by Terence Winter from the memoir by Jordan Belfort. Also left out is August: Osage County and Blue Is the Warmest Color. However, this is due to the fact that the Scripter Awards exclude stage-to-screen adaptations and foreign-language films.

The high-profile omissions means it's unlikely the Scripter will perfectly forecast the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nominees like last year, in which all five nominees at the Academy Awards were nominated for the Scripter. So which films will/should advance to the Oscars? Sound off in the comments!
