True Blood - Season 5 Episode 7 - Video Recap and Review - In the Beginning
In one of the most ominous moments in True Blood history, the mother of all vampires, Lilith, showed up to the party this week. She showed up late, but she still exists! At least, we think she exists! "In the Beginning" was full of twists and turns. While I can't recall the last time the plot of this show seemed so chaotically complicated, I'm loving it!
The episode opened where the last left off. Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) were left in a tizzy after Roman met the true death. Russell (Denis O'Hare) pinned Eric up on a pillar, and was "seized" by the authority. Bill and Eric realized they'd been duped by someone, or everyone, into recovering Russell. Molly (Tina Majorino) wants to know why her iStakes didn't work!
Eric ends up blaming two-faced Nora (Lucy Griffiths) for their predicament. Bill hates everyone right now. Soon enough, the truth is revealed. Salome (Valentina Cervi) followed them the night they buried Russell and eventually was the one to dig him up. Nora was her right hand girl, and Russell is all for the Lilith brigade now that he's free and protected. He plays into the whole act very well, but Eric and Bill immediately refuse to denounce mainstreaming in favor of their fundamentalist ways.
Back at the bottom of the genie bottle, also known as the secret fairy club (which sounds lamer?), Jason (Ryan Kwanten) watched over Sookie (Anna Paquin) as a couple of decent fairies ran some tests on her luminescence. The tests didn't really go as well as they'd hoped.
Jason: "Her head lit up real good, I thought!"
Sookie's magic is finite because she's only a mudblood. She can essentially use it all up and become a boring old human. It really doesn't seem like having fairy powers is that bad of a situation when you consider the fact that if and when they run out, vampires will still exist. Also, they didn't mention anything about Sookie's blood tasting any less like cotton candy if she uses up her light powers. Sookie is pretty sold, though. She just wants to be a normal waitress, you guys!.. until she loses the attention of every supernatural man in town. In which case, I'm sure she'd regret that decision.
Back at the gun store crime scene, Andy (Chris Bauer) is interrogated by his own man, while Sam (Sam Trammell) sniffs away like a puppy. He rolled around on the store floor, basking in the scents of bad diets and hatred, until he uncovered the Obama masks! Sam is the town vigilante!
Grow up, Hoyt (Jim Parrack)! Hoyt has been invited to join the supernatural hate group responsible for killing Sam's shifter friends. He's so desperate to belong somewhere and this hate group feels more comfortable than church to him. He claims he hates Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll), and the group encourages him. They convince him that he was under some sort of spell. It didn't take much convincing. Later, Hoyt embarked on his first mission with these backwoods idiots. It's presumed they were headed towards Jessica's party house. If they ever do a Real World: Bon Temps, they're booking Jessica's mansion.
Alcide's (Joe Manganiello) plot this week surrounded his training in the fight against J.D. His pretty second in command kicked his ass, but the two ended up getting a little hot and heavy. That is, until Martha (Dale Dickey) showed up. She stuck up for J.D. and claimed he had no V addiction. She claimed he trained Marcus as pack leader, even when it was his right to lead. Alcide refuses to take V to challenge J.D.'s strength, even if he loses. Later, a scene in which J.D. explained his deal with Russell to his pack exposed his addiction to Martha, and she got her granddaughter Emma the hell out of there before he fed her Russell's blood. She's eight! I knew I liked Martha, and this scene proved her good intentions, at least for now.
Arlene (Carrie Preston) and Holly (Lauren Bowles) watched her wedding tape. Level-headed Holly convinced Arlene to fight for her relationship with Terry. Is it really that hard to believe an Ifrit exists? Arlene seems to give in, thankfully. Terry (Todd Lowe), on the other hand, almost blew his brains out after the Ifrit showed up just to mock Patrick (Scott Foley) and himself. Patrick used Arlene's kids to reel Terry in. He doesn't want to die a coward. Patrick also apologized to Terry for giving him the order to kill the woman who cursed them.
Well, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) found Jesus' voodoo head in Don Bartolo's shack. As it turns out, Jesus' grandfather thinks Lafayette wooed Jesus to steal his strong family magic, and now he wants it back. He stitched up Lafayette's lips and carved a "V" into his head with a knife that I'm pretty sure wasn't sterile. Don Bartolo's girlfriend looked pregnant with a very active baby. Also, Lafayette's reaction to the baby moving inside of her was classic. Even the stitched lips couldn't limit his sass.
Side note: The "V" on Lafayette's head resembles the "V" they draw on your head in lipstick the first night you attend a Rocky Horror Picture Show performance. I feel you, Lafayette! Before the sacrifice could be completed, Don Bartolo's pregnant girlfriend betrayed him, and stabbed him many, many times. She then cut Lafayette's lips free. What are her intentions?
Luna (Javina Gavankar) is still hospitalized, and Sam totally abuses the visiting hours. That nurse seemed so frustrated with him! Sam feels she's safest there. Sookie showed up to bring Luna some greasy Sonic, and to ask Sam for advice. Would Sam give up his powers to be normal?
Sam: "The me I wish I was would say, 'no way!"
However, Sam wonders if the people around him would be safer, if more people would still be alive, and if he can ever really make a difference. Sookie wonders if they would still feel bothered by the hate.
Later, Sam sniffed out one of the backwoods bigots working at the hospital. He is so screwed! I'm really enjoying Sam this season.

At Fangtasia, Tara (Rutina Wesley) put on a decent strip show, while Pam (Kristen Bauer van Straten) watched on proudly. This moment was all completely ruined when the ultimate buzz-kill, Tara's Mom (Adina Porter) showed up to rain on her parade. She marched in their, out of the blue, to tell Tara that she's dead to her. The "how can you do this to me?" moment was the worst. Afterwards, Pam confronted Tara in her office.
Pam: "So, your mom's a real bitch."
The bond between Pam and her protégé grew this episode. Tara even hugged Pam after she reminded her that in a hundred years, Tara wouldn't even remember her old mother. She has a maker now! Breaks over, Tara! Back on the pole!
Back at the Authority HQ, Bill and Eric witnessed, and inevitably took part in, a ceremony honoring Lilith's blood. That old blood isn't symbolic, it's actually hers! After witnessing Russell off a member who was opposed to this blasphemy, everyone hopped on the bandwagon and took a swig of blood. Nothing will happen, right?

Wrong! The entire vampire crew was unbelievably wasted and obnoxiously marched through the streets, arrogantly assaulting humans. Lilith was their GPS. Eric gave Bill a piggy back ride, and Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) hit on Russell. Not a bad match, if you ask me! The drunken mob waltzed into the middle of a wedding party at a bar and massacred everyone. Then, like a stripper popping out of a cake, Lilith herself appeared completely nude, to sing karaoke. No, there was indeed karaoke, but Lilith just walked around all nude and powerful. Nora was all for it. Godric (Allan Hyde) was not amused. He appeared to Eric and snapped him out of it. He pleaded with Eric to save Nora. She looks pretty unsalvageable to me. Eric looked over to Lilith only to see Nora staring into space.

Jessica and Jason ended up having a massive blowout argument after they kissed and he tasted human blood on her lips. Jessica simply forgot that she had just been feeding. "It's just like a cow," she sort of insisted. To Jason, that translated to "you are basically just a cow." She bit him, he shot her in the head, and he left.
Upon leaving, Jason caught a glimpse of the lightning show Sookie was putting on. She decided to waste away her flashlight fingers after reminiscing on the past four seasons of being called a freak. Jason ran off to save the day.
What did you all think of the episode? Did Jessica deserve to get shot in the face? Is Pam the only lady left who can rock crimped hair? Who's side is Molly on? Do you like superhero Sam? Is Tara a better stripper or bartender? In all seriousness, how the hell can anyone stop Lilith (if she's real)? Call Sookie!.. yet again.
