Top 25 Performances of 2012 – New Year’s Countdown – #13

Melanie Martinez

#13 is Melanie Martinez with "Toxic"! I was so tempted to choose "Seven Nation Army" instead, but when it comes to a performer like Melanie, I truly feel like the first time you experience their artistry is a special moment. That's not to say that Melanie didn't have several other great performances across her life on The Voice. This dark and twisted take on a Britney Spears dance track ranks as one of the greatest Voice auditions ever.

Maybe there were some folks out there who found Melanie's stylings a little redundant, but it's not like anyone was forced into a full-on concert experience. Watching her perform once a week was always a pleasure, and in a show that sometimes found itself over-saturated in bombastic vocals, Melanie's vibe always did the trick. Also, as an NYU graduate, I've had this mental gag-reflex ingrained in my brain that's triggered by the mere sight of two-toned hair, and I've never found Melanie to be pretentious or obnoxious. She actually seems pretty cool! Now I sound like Miley Cyrus.

I'm thinking Melanie will have whatever kind of musical career she aspires to have. I'm not sure Top 40 radio is ready for her kind of a sound, but who cares? I'm not even sure if that's Melanie's goal. Her fans adore her, and she's the kind of artist that will maintain the following she's built based off of her success on the show. She's also the kind of contestant I'll remember to check up on years from now. Good luck, teen Pebbles!
