The Tomorrow People - Episode 8 - Recap - Thanatos

The Tomorrow People returns for another round of teenaged, super-powered melodrama on The CW, and this week is pretty neat! The good guys capture the main bad guy and a lot of secret history is revealed! To catch you up: The Tomorrow People are a group of super powered individuals (they've got teleportation, telepathy, and telekinesis) being hunted by a paramilitary group of secret agents called Ultra. The main guy is called Stephen, and he's a stupidly oblivious double agent between Ultra and some rebel mutants.

The show starts, BOOM, six years in the past. Handsome Tomorrow Man John is in an Ultra lab, getting the procedure that'll let him kill folks. It seems like something's going wrong but then, BOOM (again), it's the present and the evil secret agent man Jedikiah was just having a nightmare. Oops, okay! His bedmate seems to be a Tomorrow Person. But hey, the episode abandons this frame story and just kinda keeps showing flashbacks anyway. In the past, Jedikiah tests John's new ability to kill by having him cap some hooded hostage. But hey, the gun was loaded with blanks! The test was indeed just a test. Then the big reveal comes. John was the one tasked to hunt down Stephen's dad, and he succeeded. Put two bullets right in his chest. Yep! Deadzo. Big time dead.

Stephen relates his freaky dad vision to his subway buddies, but "Thanatos" isn't really a super helpful thing for a ghost dad to say. They decide that mind-reading Jedikiah would be the best way to find out more, which is completely bonkers. Russell and Cara go in to get it done, something goes wrong and Russell is stuck once Jedikiah wakes up and activates his power-dampening security system. A fight ensues! Russell manages to deactivate the security, but he teleports out still entangled with Jedikiah! Whoops! Now the sewer buddies get a hostage. Cara beats him up a little, but he won't talk about Thanatos. She can't use her powers without blowing Stephen's (very tenuous) cover. Anyway, John and Cara learn about Jedikiah's superpowered lover and use her as leverage, getting the info on Thanatos immediately. Turns out he's some professor who got a deadly reputation in Ultra's earlier years. Stephen and friends track down Dr. Thanatos and he reveals that Stephen's dad also had the time-stop power, and that it opened the way to a secret dimension. Huh. Okay.

Over at Ultra, everyone is on full alert, what with the boss getting kidnapped. Stephen is introduced to the team of psychics who are tracking down Jedikiah. He also meets the boss of Ultra! Oh boy! Ultra heads out on a big hunt, tracking leads. They know to go after the Tomorrow Lady Jedikiah was sleeping with. Stephen saves her once he realizes she's only with Jedikiah out of actual love. The psychics aren't doing great at finding Jedikiah, either, so the big boss man takes one of their places! Oh hey, he's another self-hating Tomorrow Guy! They're closing in now, having found the right subway tunnel.

While everyone's away talking to the Thanatos guy, Jedikiah nearly escapes (via fighting Russell) but Cara stops him... using her powers! Whoops, oh no! The crew has John take Jedikiah away, but John doesn't kill him and then gets his dumb ass captured, the doofus. Stephen sees the memory of John killing his daddy. Ah geez. This will all resolve next week in the mid-season finale! I hope! This episode did a good job ramping up the action, and I was legitimately surprised by all the twists. No teen drama, but it was still okay! Anyway, here's the video preview!
