The Tomorrow People - Episode 6 - Recap - Sorry For Your Loss
The CW has for us another installment of The Tomorrow People, their teen superpower drama. The eponymous group are teens who can teleport, read thoughts, and move objects with their minds. They lack the ability to kill, as they're a new species that's meant to be more evolved than normal humans. There's a government agency called Ultra who is hunting them down and murdering them because they're... dangerous... even though they can't kill?? Ah, who knows what government agencies are thinking anyway!
A pool shark named Piper seems to be our latest new Tomorrow Person. She gets away before Russell and Stephen can talk to her. Stephen and Cara go out and find her later while John is away, but she runs off. Ultra also found her. Stephen and Cara do the ol' fake-out makeout to lose the agents, then have a bunch of scenes of terrible awkward flirting. Luckily, the two find Piper again, and manage to get her to the subway base, but they discover her sister is an Ultra agent! It's Stephen's sometimes-partner Darcy. Stephen insists on arranging a meet despite Cara thinking it is a terrible idea. Darcy threatens to turn him in, but agrees to meet with her sister. Uh oh, she double-crossed Stephen and Piper, shock. Except when Stephen and Piper are escaping, Darcy sacrifices herself to buy them time. Even though Stephen can stop time and all three of them can teleport so really nobody had to get shot at all. Oh well!
This week's origin is Russell, who was a piano player with a very strict Japanese father. he used his powers, as a teen, to cheat at cards with gangsters. Russell has to run away, but the thugs track him to his father's house. They argue, but when the criminals break in, Dad has Russell hide and doesn't give him up, despite having his had destroyed with a hammer. In modern times, the subway crew's supercomputer informs Russell of an obituary... his father! John and Russell head off to go to the funeral. Russell gets drunk and starts trouble, which impedes their trip. They eventually get free and Russell reunites with his mom. This was the best plot of the episode, and it had nothing to do with Ultra or superpowers or any of that at all.
I wish they'd focus on the teen drama more than the dumb government agency stuff. Except... after Stephen and Cara got back from their mission, they made out again and got naked with each other and I hated it. Stephen is fine as a protagonist, he's the standard dull hero guy. That's fine, lots of shows have that character as the moral center to drive the show. I don't have a problem with that. What I don't like is how Cara treats him like he's really cool and special. His friendship with Astrid is funny and awesome because she calls him out on being too serious or acting like a dork. Cara just idolizes him though! Anyway, check out the preview below!
