The Tomorrow People - Episode 4 - Recap - Killed Or Be Killed

The CW continues its Wednesday night superhero block, following Arrow with their new revival of The Tomorrow People. The eponymous group is an evolved form of humans, with superpowers (telekinesis, teleportation, telepathy, and being unable to kill anyone), and they're at odds with a secret policing organization called Ultra. Our hero, Stephen, works for Ultra at the behest of an underground resistance. Stephen also has his own new power: Stopping time!

Stephen continues his training, but this has become a problem. Turns out he forgot to quit film club at school, so the teacher who runs it calls up Mom. Mom also found Stephen's Ultra ID card. You'd think an after-school job would be preferable to the other type of stuff teens could get up to. Mom insists on a dinner with Jedikiah and Stephen. It ends up super awkward when mom starts being mad at Jedikiah about her vanished husband (Stephen's dad). I like the aspect of the show where Stephen's mom is suspicious about him for no good reason and I wish there was more of it!

Ultra is heading into panic mode as a rogue former agent goes on a rampage. They had experimented with removing a Tomorrow Person's inability to kill, and the result was a bad dude named... Killian. Yep. Killian. Wow. Anyway, Killian breaks into Ultra for some reason and then gets away. Stephen begs Jedikiah to send him to go get the guy, and he relents. It turns out that Killian was looking for the personnel file on John Young, one of the subway crew. They had been partnered at Ultra, and now Killian wants John to join him. One problem: Killian loves blowing stuff up. John and Stephen track him to his next bombing target, and John has to do some very precise teleporting so they can cut all the bomb wires at the same time. Jedikiah asks Stephen to set up a meeting with John, and John cautiously agrees.

This week's flashback origin story belongs to Handsome Blonde Tomorrow Person, aka John Young. He'd lived in an abusive foster home until Ultra found and recruited him. The training was intense, bordering on abuse, so John ran off. Back at the bad foster home, Evil Drunk Foster Dad starts hitting John, saying he's got to go back. Then John teleports, since he's a dumb teen at this point and doesn't know to hide his powers. The fight turns against John, and Jedikiah comes to the rescue, shooting Foster Dad dead.

At their meeting, John agrees to help Jedikiah hunt down and stop Killian, with Jedikiah telling him that he knows what needs to be done... Hmmm... Mysterious... Almost like maybe... John can also kill? Seems pretty obvious. Anyway, John goes in and has a fight with Killian, but Stephen discovers in the control room that Jedikiad plans to betray John. Back at the fight, Killian gains the upperhand, thinking he can kill and John can't, then John shoots a hole right in him! Yup, see? He can totally kill dudes. Later, John pulls the trick on Jedikiah where you wait in someone's backseat and then have a menacing conversation when they get in the car. Both sides sling some threats, but it's all the same old "us vs. them" stuff. Needs more teen drama!

This episode had intrigue and action, but I preferred the high school drama from the previous episodes. We don't even see Stephen at school once! I can't wait to find out what happens now that his non-powered school friend knows about Stephen's teleporting. Perhaps next week?? In the meantime, here's this week's preview!
