The Tomorrow People - Episode 3 - Recap - Girl, Interrupted
The CW's angsty new superhero drama The Tomorrow People is back with a new episode! This week, the plot doesn't revolve around a new superteen, but instead expands on the rules that The Tomorrow People must follow.
Years ago, a deaf girl in a nightclub ends up flirting with a dude. Or really, he flirts with her. She doesn't say anything. They head someplace to make out, but she's hesitant and he gets violent. He's astride her, tearing her clothes off in a field, when her Tomorrow People powers decide to manifest. Skip to present day and it turns out this girl is Cara?? I didn't even know she was deaf! Back in the past, she's being arrested for murdering her attacker, which she didn't even know she did. She teleports herself to freedom, discovering Tomorrow People power number two. She heads home, able to hear now (I guess a superpower side effect??), and is rejected by her father. He gives her some money and begs her to leave. She goes, despite the cries of her younger sister. It's a bit odd for a secret origin, but it's sad and I like that.
Meanwhile, Stephen is hanging out at a party reading minds for fun. The fun turns dread when he hears one girl (Emily) thinking she'll be dead in two days' time. Cara refuses to allow him to help her. Evil Uncle Jedikiah refuses him the same. The next tme he sees her at school, he uses his powers to make her drop her notebook so he'll have an excuse to talk to her. What a well-meaning creepo! The girl's sister died, and her parents blame her. Reasonable that she's so upset then! Stephen's lie about why he's worried about Emily comes apart, though, and he's not able to talk to her long. She ends up being missing on the anniversary of her sister's death, ready to throw herself in front of a train. Cara and Handsome Tomorrow Dude both agree to help, finally. Emily's parked in front of a train, and Cara 'ports into the passenger's seat to give her the standard after-school special suicide talkdown. Emily pulls the car off the tracks at the last possible moment, and the team teleports out. Stephen's friend Astrid spots them leaving, but Stephen denies it when confronted. Uh oh! Not very far into the show and already his secret is coming loose!
Stephen's mission for The Tomorrow People this week is to infiltrate Ultra and find/hack a computer that lets Ultra find superpowered folk, their very own version of the X-Men's mutant-hunting computer helmet Cerebro. He returns successful, despite a glitch in Cara's mindlink. Later, the kids (less Stephen) head out to meet a new Tomorrow Person. There's some resistance from Ultra, and from the target. Turns out Ultra set this up as a trap! Cara is captured, and Stephen has his mind set to save her. His plan seems suspect though, enough that I'm certain he's improvised it as he's telling it. Cara is tied up, set to either be killed or depowered, so Stephen suggests to Jedikiah she be depowered and then volunteers to do it himself! It seems to go off without a hitch, but she's still got her powers when they're back on the subway home! Turns out Stephen stopped time and replaced the "cure" with a saline solution.
I'm glad to see that this show is figuring out what it wants to do. There's a lot of standard superhero stuff to get through, but it doesn't feel like these plots are the same old stuff. I find it interesting that they're having Stephen's non-powered friend learn about his super stuff so early on, and I'm interested to see how that will play out! Check out the preview for this episode.
