The Tomorrow People - Episode 12 - Recap - Sitting Ducks

The CW's modern-day angsty remake of The Tomorrow People really gets its brood on this week. Between the return of Astrid as a major player and the confrontation between Stephen Jameson (Robbie Amell) and his mom's new boyfriend Peter, this episode is a real firecracker!

Uh oh! Astrid's in big trouble this week. Ultra does not take kindly to mundane humans knowing about superpowers, and last week, Stephen's partner Hillary totally saw him teleport with Astrid. This episode starts with her being possibly assassinated, before skipping 48 hours back to show us what's up. Hillary is being a real brat about the whole thing, even uncovering that time Astrid almost walked into that party where Ultra straight-up murdered a bunch of unarmed teenagers. Anyway, we catch back up to the opening teaser, but John rescues her at the very last moment. He gets hit, somehow, by the totally dumb Ultra agents who otherwise spend the whole scene shooting bullet after bullet at the blank room right after the pair teleports out. Still, Astrid has got to get John's guts to stop bleeding before they can escape more. He loses consciousness and Astrid has to call Cara for help, using mega product placement: Skype from a Windows Phone to a Windows 8 touchscreen PC. They do an entire bullet removal surgery over Skype, in fact. It's really egregious. Then, Cara comes and breaks into the building to rescue the two of them. She can't 'port in for some kinda iffy reason, but she can just pop up just outside of the building no problem. Cara takes Astrid first before going back for John. Astrid gets really bummed about not being able to go home, which is reasonable. I mean, Stephen didn't have to tell her any of this superpowers stuff.

John's got a bad past experience relating to how Ultra deals with human witnesses to superpowers. 14 years ago, John's pal Tony ran a newsstand where John picked up his Flash comics each month (they even get the issue number, cover, and plotline right). Jedikiah made John watch while Ultra agents gunned down Tony, the only friend John had in the whole world. John shares a memory with Stephen from right after this affair, where Stephen's dad Roger shows up to comfort a distressed young John. Roger tells John that some day, he might have to protect Stephen. Hmm...

Stephen's not in much of the main plot because his family is going on a camping trip with Mom's new boyfriend Peter, which has Stephen suspicious. Peter was able to push Stephen out of his mind, which means he's got powers. The running water messes with Stephen's telepathy. Stephen's being a real bully about it, even getting Peter to instinctually use his telekinesis to stop from dropping his camera. I'm hoping Peter turns out to not be evil. Stephen confronts Peter, trying to get him to admit about having powers. Peter ends up pushed off a cliff into a rushing river, not using any powers to save himself... Uhhhh... Oops! Good work, Stephen, ya jerk! It turns out that Peter is probably powerless, but Stephen's brother Luca probably is breaking out! Woah!

Surprisingly solid! I think The Tomorrow People is finally finding its legs. There's still some wonky leaps of logic and hand-wavey non-explanations, but the drama and the tension are real. Plus, that entire camping plot was hilarious! Check out the preview for this episode below.
