The Tomorrow People - Episode 1 - Recap - Pilot
The CW is premiering a show, the fourth iteration of a British children's show (man, British shows just won't die) from the 1970s called The Tomorrow People. The basic premise is that there's a new race of people, homo superior. They've got superpowers and the government doesn't like them. This new remake is all sleak and sexy and full of teenager drama. Right after the main character is introduced, we're shown the concept in a tight little action sequence: There's this guy, he's doing a robbery when he teleports out of the building. He hops down into the subway and beats up some dudes who were chasing him, then gets teleport punched once he's down there right on the moving train! Maybe these are... The Tomorrow People??
Stephen Jameson takes a pill for breakfast, and goes to high school where he has no friends. He lives with his overworked mom in an apartment. I think it's meant to be a small one, but it's way nicer than my apartment. Anyway, this dude straps himself into bed at night! Weird, right? Then he wakes up in someone else's bed, and it makes sense. This has happened before. Then, at school, he starts to hear messages in his head from a lady's voice, telling him he's not crazy. It happens again that night, and she has him go down to the subway from before. The robbery dude teleports him to the hideout where they literally actually inroduce themselves as The Tomorrow People. Like... wow. Come on. Anyway, there's fifteen of them, all with telekinesis, telepathy, and teleportation. They take a page out of the X-Men handbook, calling their mutated species "homo superior". The government is hunting them, an organization called Ultra. Stephen's dad left to protect him from Ultra. They've even got a video message to prove it. Anyway, he gets mad and asks to leave, so they take him home.
At school the next day, he tells his lady pal all abou this, but he can't demonstrate it (despite floating his toothbrush just earlier that day). I dunno, dude, you probably should've just, like, showed her. He's yelling about not needing his medication, and about how it's holding back his potential. It's... not a good look. Later, though, he does a little hadoken move on a bully, but passes out when he tries to do a Darth Vader mind choke on him. He has to leave school early, worrying his mom that all this is following the path his dad followed. Later, Ultra kidnaps him. Well then. The other Tomorrow People (cripes, do I really have to call them that?) stage a rescue. The bad guys are going to administer a cure for Stephen's powers, but they have to take care of the security breach. The Tomorrow People discover their powers have been turned off, but nobody told Stephen, because he teleports out of his restraints and then stops tim and then teleports everyone (well, the good guys) out of there.
Back at base, he agrees to maybe hang out with these guys sometimes. Then when he gets home, the bad guy boss who captured him before is there! And he's Stephen's uncle!! Whaaaaaat!! Uncle Bad Guy offers Stephen a job, and he initially is like "Hell naw!" but then later does it anyway, which I'm sure won't be a huge disaster at all.
This was an interesting premiere! I'm hoping that the series will develop the stronger aspects of the show, like the teen drama and the group of Tomorrow People that was introduced, because the stuff about Stephen's dad and family isn't as cool. I'm hoping the superpowers either start to vary (which they did when Stephen displayed a new power) or aren't so much the focus. There's a lot of potential here, and I'm willing to let The CW win me over as a fan here! There's a lot of solid foundation, so I say bring it on!
