According to local authorities, the wedding between Cruise and Holmes could be purely ceremonial because the stars did not obtain permission for a civil service and the Church of Scientology service which will be held, may not be recognized as a legally binding wedding either.

"There is no marriage. This is not legal here, and there will be nothing formal about the wedding," Iris Novello, a spokeswoman for the town council said.

The cost of the event is estimated at over 2 million euros ($2.5 million). The pair's outfits were designed by Giorgio Armani, who also created the bride's bouquet. Armani's niece was among the first guests to arrive at the wedding.
