So Thor Is A Woman Now

It's a new age for Thor, the God of Thunder! An age of...femininity?

Marvel has announced that, with the upcoming THOR series, written by Jason Aaron with art by Russell Dauterman, the titular God of Thunder will be a female.

“The inscription on Thor's hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it's time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron stresses, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

The move is part Marvel's continued, female-centric initiative intent on bringing new readers into the Marvel Universe. This latest THOR series will be the 8th Marvel title to feature a lead female protagonist, and it could quite possibly bridge the gap with female readers. However, will it risk alienating male fans? Only time will tell. But I do love the design of the character, and I think this is an interesting concept, if a little gimmick. What do you think?
