The Voice - iTunes Studio Recordings - Battle Round 3 Review
I'm reviewing the iTunes studio recordings for The Voice.
My standards are a bit different for this show compared to the American Idol recordings, as The Voice is better produced than the Idol tracks overall. This is actually better since we can have a better critique, and not be bogged down by the fact that a singer sounds bad both live and in the studio because inherently they can't sing. (Some of the singers on Idol this season can't even be saved by auto-tune for example).
So yes, I am reviewing The Voice on a higher standard because the show allows me to naturally.
Here are the reviews this week:
Pip - You Know I'm No Good
This is a solid recording from Pip but it was a little boring. The song was just flatline throughout.
Rating: 3/5
Compare to: Pip vs. Nathan
Erin Martin - What’s Love Got To Do With It
Vocally this was OK, but really, the treatment of this song was just off. I hate the affected singing! I guess some fans will like this, but definitely a no for me. This is a well-produced bad interpretation.
Rating: 1/5
Compare to: Erin vs. Shields Brothers
Ashley De La Rosa - No Air
A solid recording from Ashley. Her mission in the live shows is to differentiate herself from the pack and not just be another voice. She's a middle of the pack performer all throughout.
Rating: 3/5
Compare to: Ashley vs. Jonathas
Jermaine Paul - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car
I was expecting a bit more from Jermaine. This was disappointing. His voice has no depth. Bad song choice from Blake Shelton that showcases only the weakness in Jermaine's vocals. He actually reminds me a bit of Joshua Ledet's first recording from American Idol: their stage presence while performing live has a zero carry over to the recording studio.
Rating: 2/5
Compare to: Jermaine vs. Alyx
Katrina Parker - Bleeding Love
I love Katrina's voice! She adds just enough nuance without coming across as trying hard. Excellent recording! Highly recommended.
Rating: 5/5
Compare to: Katrina vs. Angel
Erin Willet - We Belong
I was expecting a fuller sound from Erin, specially after her excellent duet with Gwen Sebastian in the Battle Round. There are moments here that sound wonderful, but overall not as good as I wanted it to be. I was hoping to capture the emotional moments of the duet in this recording, but sadly it was touch and go.
Rating: 4/5
Compare to: Erin vs. Gwen
