The Secret Circle - Season 1 Episode 21 - Prom - Recap
Prom is finally here and while it isn’t quite the central focus, it’s a nice stepping stone for an intense story-based episode that packs at least one major revelation. The Secret Circle finale is next week!

After finding out the “traitor witch” is actually Nick, the circle gets in a little spat about what they should do and what this means about Nick. Blackwell tries to talk to Diana because he needs her to form the Crystal Skull. There goes the whole Indiana Jones flashback thing. He tells Cassie how to draw the crystal’s energy so that she can find that last crystal. Why are they still trusting this guy? She goes to the school ALONE (like, really?) and somehow sees a flash of her mother holding the crystal.
Cassie goes to Diana asking for her blood so the two of them can time travel and find out what kooky stuff is going on at the school. Charles also gives Diana a necklace that used to belong to her mother. Yay, a rare bonding moment between father and daughter. I love these! Apart from the crystal situation, prom is here too! Faye is going with Jake, and it kind-of-but-not-really seems like Adam wants to take Cassie. Or maybe it’s just a carpooling issue? They all plan to meet at the abandoned house and go from there.
Melissa gets to the house before anyone else, and Nick is there waiting for her. I loved the two of them together! I kind of forgot how cute he was too. He goes batshit and pushes Melissa over… it doesn’t look like he’s about to remember her anytime soon.
Blackwell is anxious to sever Diana’s bond with Charles with whatever means necessary, and even though Dawn’s relationship with Charles is rather shaky, she calls him in warning but he doesn’t answer. She could have at least left him a message, I mean honestly. Melissa is convinced that the reason Nick came to the abandoned house must be because part of him remembers his surroundings, but everyone else seems unconvinced.
That sort-of-annoying-but-sort-of-cute guy that Diana went on a couple dates with is back, and he’s just as kind-of-annoying as ever. She makes plans to hang with him after prom, maybe because that would be a little too weird to invite him along. Without any of the annoying prom dress hunts or tuxedo fittings, everyone arrives at prom just like that. Who would have ever thought it was that easy?
Meanwhile, Blackwell is doing some kooky kinda thing to Charles where everything on his phone is all mumbly jumbly. Dawn gets through to him finally, but his phone still goes crazy. He has a flashback to killing Amelia when Blackwell torments the crap of him by lighting everything on fire in his house and then making it go poof. For a second there, I really thought Charles was about to go up in smoke and I was really scared… but then all was well. Blackwell is up to no good and somehow nobody notices.
Cassie and Diana put their blood together, and they’re instantly back in 1995. The fashion is pretty awesome, I mean who doesn’t love a nice jean jacket. Their moms are fighting and Amelia insists that Elizabeth should leave with Charles and Diana. Amelia is like Cassie but 1000x more annoying.
Back in modern day, Nick snaps a security guard’s neck and breaks into the school. Nobody likes a party crasher. Adam and Melissa do some magic in the prom hallway and set up their own little spotlight. It would almost be cute if it wasn’t so random. Faye pulling Jake onto the dance floor feels much more romantic or organic. I didn’t think I would like the two of them together at all, but they really have chemistry. He’s hurting on the inside about his brother, and she’s there for him.
In 1995, Amelia drops a big, big bombshell: Blackwell played a part in the conception of all six of the new circle, four of them with magic and two himself. I guess he gave their boyfriends magical sperm, or something like that. The whole circle was planned by Blackwell himself. Adam’s grandpa hides the crystal for Amelia, promising to leave it cloaked in the school in the trophy case. The weirdest part of this whole scene isn’t even the fact that all six children were preordained to be born, but that Cassie seems so unaffected and not-shocked about Blackwell using them all along. She’s been blindly following him and hoping for the best for the past four or five episodes, so shouldn’t finding out this vital piece of the puzzle have a bit more of an emotional effect on her? It takes Diana ripping her a new one for Cassie to see just how despicable Blackwell really is.

After Diana runs off, Nick overhears Cassie saying the crystal’s location and bum-rushes Adam, fleeing with it. Diana comes across Charles back at her house, who is freaking out and thinks he’s being haunted by Amelia. He admits to killing Cassie’s mom, and then Diana runs out in the rain and into the arms of annoying loverboy. Aw, both her parents are psychotic murders. That’s just depressing.
The Nick-chasing leads the circle to an abandoned junkyard where they split up, like all intelligent teenagers tend to do in potentially life-threatening situations. They come across Eben and Nick, where he is trying to make a trade for the crystal. So, the demon is still inside Nick and it appears to be the only thing keeping him alive. Cassie retrieves the crystal, but Eben knocks her out and tries to kill everyone. Blackwell comes to their rescue. Jake tries to stab Nick, but in the end it’s Melissa who kills him. No! I was really hoping for some sort of impossible redemption. Eben gets away, and takes Faye with him. So then they have to decide: do they trust Blackwell and try to make the crystal skull to save her or try something else?
The finale looks outstanding, and like it’s going to bring back some things from earlier in the season that we haven’t seen in awhile. I think I spotted a crystal skull too, although Indiana Jones was suspiciously absent. I can’t wait! Please save Faye.
