The Originals - Recap: Sit, Stay, Roll Over

The Originals continued tonight with an episode that had the supernatural factions of the French Quarter at one another’s throats as they fought to create a peace treaty. Meanwhile, Davina would make an amazing florist, and werewolves probably suck.

Episode 17 of Season 1 of The Originals, “Moon Over Bourbon Street,” took place about a month after Rebekah’s unfortunate permanent departure from the series. What gives, Claire Holt? In any case, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) has taken to painting, which means he’s at work stewing a new master plan in that insidious brain of his. While Davina (Danielle Campbell) dealt with mean girls within her coven, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) seemed right at home in her were-fraternity. As Cami (Leah Pipes) attempted to help her uncle, Father Kieran (Todd Stashwick), fend off imminent insanity, none other than Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) offered a sensual helping hand that paired well with bourbon. Lastly, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) attempted to negotiate peace between the warring groups of the French Quarter. At this point, everybody is awful. Can Matt Donovan move to New Orleans? Here is the Recap and Review of Season 1 Episode 17 of The Originals, “Moon Over Bourbon Street”!

Klaus is quite the budding artist, it seems, though after thousands of years, wouldn’t you be an expert painter? It seemed nothing could distract Klaus from his artwork, something that later worried Hayley. If you recall, Klaus only paints as a means of exhibiting complete control of his domain. Aah… a new master plan for the Original hybrid, but what? Elijah, meanwhile, nearly begged his brother for help wrangling together the witches, vampires, and humans in an effort to negotiate a new peace treaty. Why would Klaus care about that? It’s not as though he asked to be king or anything. Well, I guess if you take over an entire kingdom by force, you can do whatever the hell you want. Klaus is the villain of his own show, of course.

As all of this transpired, Celeste’s antidote worked its magical charm over Hayley’s people, freeing them from the reversal with which Marcel had cursed them. Party! Literally, it seemed to take mere seconds for barbecued ribs and a fight club to materialize. Still, the fun and games would not last for long. Once whispers reached the wolves regarding their lack of an invite to Elijah’s meeting, the crazy pregnant were-lady was on her way to ream her former flame a new one. Can we even call Elijah that at this point? In any case, Hayley wasn’t happy that her wolves were being treated like swamp scum.

Even Genevieve (Elyse Levesque) was invited to this thing! By the way, Klaus and Genevieve started bonking during Episode 17. That was quick! One minute someone’s an evil witch out to curse your entire family with unspeakable pain for all eternity. The next, it’s all… want to get naked on my painting break? Cami engaged half-naked Genevieve in a battle of wits for a moment there, adequately out-sassing Klaus’ latest lay in order to score some alone time with the Original. Cami is getting absolutely desperate in her quest to help Kieran, guys. The priest is not doing well. I mean, the man has taken to chaining himself up in the attic of the church, at one point lunging at Cami in order to snuff out her empty life. Yikes! Those witch hexes don’t mess around. According to Klaus, there simply is no cure. The hex starts off as magical then manifests as a physical atrophy of the mind.

I would throw out some super tired Mean Girls quotes to spice up Davina’s arc this week, but then I’d have to quit my job in penance. Basically, Monique Deveraux is the worst. Remember when she murdered Aunt Sophie and felt no subsequent remorse? She took to mocking Davina for fearing to tap into her source of magic while the other two living Harvest girls revived roses. Davina, you see, was too afraid to tempt the fates by using magic ever again. Her ancestors really gave her a hard talkin’ to in the afterlife, huh? So rude. Bullies!

Davina ran straight to a secret encounter with Josh (Steven Krueger) at a faraway diner. Josh is still in hiding, by the way. Does anybody care that he’s still alive? As in, does Klaus even remember that Josh exists? Marcel listened in from a nearby rooftop, biding his own time in order to rally new troops from the outskirts of New Orleans. Thierry (Callard Harris) was his first prospective comrade, though that took a whole lot of convincing. More importantly, Marcel began to rebuild his bond with Davina from afar this week. Once Davina left her friendly conversation with Josh, Marcel swooped in to convince Josh to help Davina learn to protect herself again. He doesn’t care which side she’s on, but he doesn’t want Davina getting hurt ever again.

Klaus convinced Elijah to throw an awesome soiree in order to convince the fighting factions to hug it out in the name of whiskey. We were introduced to Francesca (Peta Sergeant) during Episode 17. Francesca is possibly the single most bizarre character to walk across our screens as a member of the Vampire Diaries Universe, folks. She’s a human in a position of power in the city, and she’s serving in Kieran’s stead while he deals with that whole unraveling mind situation. She’s into all sorts of illegal drug trafficking and casino games. Plus, she has loads of confidence to the point where, as I just said, she came off as intriguingly crazy and almost certainly evil. Who cares? She’s a hoot! We also learned a little bit more about Diego (Eka Darville) this week. Apparently, werewolves killed his entire family, and the only reason he survived was because Marcel turned him. Now, all of those wolves, Hayley’s new pack, were partying around him like it was no big deal.

See, at first, we were led to believe that the werewolves deserved equal rights and power in the French Quarter. By the end of Episode 17, however, I’m not so sure what to think. First, Klaus took it upon himself to lure pack leader Jackson (Nathan Parsons) into his art room for a private meeting. There, he shared with him his true intentions for fighting so hard, alongside Hayley, to have them invited that evening. Klaus allegedly wants his baby raised with a werewolf familial pack mentality. He doesn’t want the hybrid baby growing up like some solitary vampire brat or, worse yet, getting tangled up with those nasty witches. In exchange for the promise of moonlight rings, enchanted rings that work much like vampire daylight rings, Klaus struck an alliance. Though, we’re not exactly sure what that is yet. There’s no telling if Klaus can even recreate his mother’s old spell to make such a ring, but when has Klaus ever truly cared about technicalities?

Marcel visited Cami after checking in on Kieran. Cami, who’d already begun liquoring up after struggling through this situation alone for weeks, finally found herself a drinking buddy. After getting sufficiently sloshed, Marcel and Cami ended up finally giving each other a test ride in the sack. Both greatly approved of the other’s sexual technique, though both also made a deal to keep this tryst under wraps for fear of angering Klaus. Sadly, he’ll probably find out anyway considering the fact that Genevieve had literally enchanted a dream catcher and planted it in Cami’s apartment. Think “magical security camera” or, as I like to call it, proof that Genevieve is a perv. What? Sexy witches can be perverts! Luckily, Marcel spotted the device and smashed to pieces without Cami suspecting a thing.

While Marcel solidified the start of his own ragtag army on that very same rooftop on which he previously spoke with Thierry, Josh carried out his promise. In what was probably the most touching moment of Episode 17, Josh told Davina the tale of the one time he received roses from his only boyfriend. His parents found them and put them through a shredder. Today, he has no family, but he’s learned that if family can’t accept you for who you are, they’re not family anyway. Screw 'em! Davina got the message. Before long, she was re-blooming Josh a new rose to show her love and gratitude. Later, Monique, who previously tried to snatch away Davina’s werewolf dance partner at Elijah’s party, was walking into a virtual greenhouse full of beautiful roses.

A stirring speech by Hayley that, simply put, suggested the supernaturals either kiss and make up or get on with killing one another ended up doing the trick. The party was just fine, and the leaders of the different groups of the French Quarter signed a new peace treaty in blood. Even Klaus was strong-armed into signing by Elijah from within the privacy of his painting room. The werewolves, however, are some dirty mutts, it seems. Jackson feigned peace only to then chat with his friend Oliver about the potential to rule the French Quarter with iron paws thanks to Klaus’ proposition. Klaus added one last change to the painting he spent all of Episode 17 creating… on giant full moon over Bourbon Street.

What did you think of The Originals Season 1 Episode 17, “Moon Over Bourbon Street”? Do the werewolves have a right to be mad? Will Cami save Kieran, or will she be forced to step up and take his seat on the council from Francesca? Will Hayley have to choose sides? What is Klaus’ plan? How will Davina play into this?
