The Originals - Recap: Happy Rebekah Day!
Wow, Rebekah is truly a feminist, eating men in the name of innocent French virgins since the 1700s. The Originals celebrated liberating girl power with tonight’s Winter Premiere.

Episode 10 opened with a flashback to the 1700s, as Rebekah quite eloquently told the tale of the casket girls, French virgins sold to wealthy men of the colonies through church institutions. Of course, Rebekah’s version of the tale focused more on her heroic rescuing of a car full of these girls than on the actual history. Today, New Orleans celebrates the days of the casket girls in typical fashion, with thumping costume parties and street shenanigans! Happy Rebekah Day! Rebekah has claimed her own holiday, everybody, and judging by the flashback, she deserves it!The CW "The Originals"

Elijah and Hayley shared a nice moment during Episode 10 while Hayley tried on her casket girl costume. Of course, the she-wolf is bound to the compound, so the whole ordeal was rather sad. At least she got to dress up for Elijah! Jump ahead to a few minutes later, and Hayley was on the phone with Sophie Deveraux, much to her dismay. As word spread throughout the French Quarter of Davina’s escape, the witches had their magic on their minds. Remember, with the elders dead, the witches in this town have pretty much nothing to do but booze away their lives as boring, average people... like us! Their connection to the magic of their ancestors is lost, yet Sophie and Sabine (Shannon Kane) had managed to figure out a new way to regain power. By consecrating the remains of a very old witch and subsequently finding Davina, the coven could, I’m assuming, carry out their initial “harvesting” plan. The trick was that the only viable option, Elijah’s old flame Celeste, was buried in some secret location. Why would Hayley betray Elijah in order to help the witches who’d done nothing but use, abuse, and hex the hell out of her? Sophie’s bloodline is responsible for that awful “perpetual wolf” curse placed on Hayley’s swampy family. In exchange for a little snooping on Hayley’s part, Sophie agreed to lift the curse that Marcel had sanctioned.
Although she’d been preoccupied with getting vervain into Cami’s system in order to prevent future compulsion, Davina recognized magic in the area right away. Somebody was performing a locator spell with her as the target. Unfortunately, without a daylight ring, Josh was useless to her until nightfall. Cami, on the other hand, was determined to protect her new friend. Cleverly covering Davina’s face with a veiled costume, the pair attempted to meander the streets in search of a safe haven. Although the festivities of the celebration added a sufficient cloak to their mission, the fact that Klaus, Marcel, and Elijah were scouring the streets in search of the little witch all but trumped that.
Previously in Episode 10, Elijah and Marcel were forced to strike a deal. Although the two are far from friends, perhaps even closer to enemies, they both know better than to trust Klaus when he senses a looming betrayal in his midst. Now that Davina had proven to be disloyal, her life was certainly on the line, and neither Marcel nor Elijah wanted to see her killed in one of Klaus’ characteristic bouts of rage. Rebekah, meanwhile, kept her allegiance a mystery.
Realizing that the streets were unsafe, Davina and Cami eventually made their way into Father Kieran’s (Todd Stashwick) church. While they might have dodged Klaus and the gang, they weren’t nearly as safe from the witches who’d basically locked a GPS signal on Davina. One of the best moments during Episode 10 had to be when four witches, lead by Sabine, attempted to overwhelm Davina, sideswiping Cami to the ground in the process. Seeing her friend rendered unconscious, Davina lifted the foursome off the ground and broke their necks in a snap. R.I.P Sabine! Remember when you were just a mere tour guide? You should have stuck to your day job. While the witches were no problem whatsoever, Klaus managed to drum up a new plan upon spotting Josh out in the open once night had fallen. If Klaus could compel Davina’s love interest, Tim, into complying once again, Davina would subsequently need to show herself. The fiddle boy is the key to her heart.

I’m not going to lie. Seeing Tim perched up on a beam like Klaus’ personal fiddle player was hilarious. Sorry, Davina! However, by the time the most powerful witch in New Orleans arrived after hearing word of Klaus’ plan to kill Tim from Josh, the mood totally shifted. Klaus, Marcel, and Elijah had no idea just how furious Davina was with their respective betrayals. Before we knew it, her magic had Klaus on all fours, writhing like a “beast” and showing his werewolf side. Elijah, on the other hand, was made to suffer for his sense of self-righteousness, and Davina had him choke to death on the blood of the innocents he drank for centuries. Marcel, for what it’s worth, was never punished by Davina, but not on her own accord. Rebekah arrived just in time to render him incapacitated before helping Tim from the high ledge.

Using her decision to treat Tim and Josh with respect as a means to begin to convince Davina to trust her, Rebekah’s intentions became clear. Having been scorned by Marcel and Klaus time and time again, not to mention the fact that Elijah seems persistently preoccupied, Rebekah refused to allow this lot to rule New Orleans any longer. Rebekah then took the trio to “the Garden,” Marcel’s brutal prison for even the silliest of crimes against vampires. Poor Tim was so shell-shocked by the entire ordeal that no one even questioned his offer of a swig water to Davina. By the time the two were struggling for survival in agonizing pain on the dirt floor, it became clear that Klaus had compelled Tim, in a last ditch effort, to eliminate Davina from the game. Pleading over the phone, Rebekah attempted to save the lives of these two children in the wake of her brother’s ridiculous war for territory and power, but Klaus could not be reasoned with.
Even vampire blood couldn’t cure Klaus’ poison; however, Marcel thankfully thought up his own fail-safe. Having stumbled upon the bodies Davina had left behind in the church, Marcel was pleased to find Sabine stirring awake. Un-R.I.P Sabine! C’est la vie! Sabine had been smart enough to cast another protection spell over herself. Sabine, not for nothing, but why didn’t you share this amazingly helpful tip with your three friends? Marcel gave the witch two options. Die or cast the same spell over Davina. Thus, Davina sprang back to life, leaving only poor, innocent Tim to suffer an untimely death. Hmm… Didn’t they feed these kids vampire blood before their deaths? Yet nothing. Oh, well. Till never, Tim! R.I.P. Fiddle Boy.
Rebekah returned to the compound with an exhausted Davina asleep in her arms. Absolutely disgusted with Klaus, and still incredibly disappointed in Marcel, she grudgingly handed her over to her former beau for safekeeping. Upstairs, Marcel explained the ominous meaning behind a unique set of Davina’s drawings, sketches that seemed completely abstract and strange. Something evil this way comes, folks! By the close of Episode 10, Hayley had successfully helped Sophie to locate the body of Celeste between two specific trees. The she-wolf had previously dug through Elijah’s old diaries in order to find this burial spot, a location safe from the torturous world of the supernatural beings and protected by nature. As Elijah began to piece together Davina’s sketches like a puzzle, Sophie continued to dig. In the end, it turns out that this ominous new super-evil will be brought forth by… Celeste! Davina’s drawings, when stacked accordingly, revealed a perfect portrait of her face. I could totally feel that pre-vomit vibe coming off of Hayley upon hearing this news.

To close the recap of Episode 10, it’s also important to point out that Cami got some peace of mind this week. First, she confronted Father Kieran regarding his decision to keep her in the dark, essentially allowing her to doubt her own sanity along with her brother's. Her encounter with Klaus, however, seemed much more gratifying, as she promised to blow the lid off of his entire operation if he ever so much as threatened her friends, Davina and Josh, again. Meanwhile, Rebekah revealed to us whom she’d been sharing her story of heroic feminism with all throughout Episode 10. Marcel’s old bestie, Thierry (Callard Harris), has been rejuvenated, everybody, and as Rebekah’s partner in destroying the empire of Klaus and Marcel, he should prove to be an entertaining addition!
