The New Normal - Season 1 Episode 3 - Recap - Baby Clothes
Ryan Murphy’s newest comedy series The New Normal continued tonight with “Baby Clothes.” Rocky—Nene Leakes’ character—was noticeably absent this episode. Episode 3 could’ve benefitted from Rocky’s sassiness and quick-witted comebacks.
Last week, Bryan, David, and Goldie found out that they were having a baby. Tonight’s episode centered around Bryan’s fixation with baby clothes and Shania’s raging hormones.

Episode 3 kicked off with Bryan (Andrew Rannells) and Shania (Bebe Wood) rummaging through baby clothes. “If you learn nothing else in life, you can never go wrong with Dolce and Gabbana,” Bryan said to Shania. When David (Justin Bartha) walked into the common area, he was surprised to see piles of baby clothes on the table. “We agreed no buying any baby things until after the health tests!,” said David.
The following scene took place at the “Expanding Families” firm. This is the firm where Bryan and David met their surrogate mother, Goldie (Georgia King). The representative they spoke to mentioned that: At 12 weeks of pregnancy, they must scan for signs of possible Down Syndrome or other abnormalities. David—who happens to be a gynecologist—interjected the representative, and proceeded to describe all of the pregnancy tests by himself. One of the tests he mentioned was “Quadruple Marker Screener,” which measures signs of possible Spina Bifida or Red hair. The representative added, “If you ever see a red head, scream fire in the hole! Fire in the hole!” [credit: Ryan Murphy’s wit]

Shania went to school wearing a “crop top” (which is code for—a baby’s shirt). She borrowed one of Bryan’s baby clothes from earlier in the morning, and decided to wear it to school. Her new attire attracted a boy/classmate named Wilbur, whom asked Shania out to lunch. She was so ecstatic over this.... she texted her mother to let her know that a boy just took notice.
With the intention of buying new clothes for Shania, Goldie, Bryan, and David went shopping at an outlet mall. Bryan secretly wandered off to the section filled with baby clothes. Even though David caught Bryan sneaking off, they later made up and kissed. As they were kissing, a family of 3 (a husband, a wife, and a daughter) told them to stop kissing in front of their daughter. Although David decided to ignore this incident, Bryan stood up for himself and berated the man. Note: The daughter was a red-head!
Jane/Nana (Ellen Barkin) came to pick up her great-grand daughter, Shania, from school. Only thing is... Nana caught Shania and Wilbur making out in a little corner of the room.
Back at Bryan and David’s home, Bryan was visibly and understandably upset over what happened at the outlet mall. “There will always be stupid jerks in the world, just ignore them,” said David. Bryan disagreed and revealed that he doesn’t want their child to go through the same type of hate.
Nana took Shania & Wilbur to Planned Parenthood:
Nana: “I’m going to need the best method of birth control.”
Receptionist at Planned Parenthood: “Ma’am, isn’t your AGE the best method of birth control?”
Nana revealed that she was trying to acquire birth control for her 9-year-old great grand daughter, Shania:
Nana: “I might also need some tiny, tiny condoms for that little one (Wilbur).”
The next scene took place at the gym. David punched a guy in the face for calling a handicapped man the “R” word. Then, the handicapped man verbally attacked David, and called him the “F” word. The handicapper didn’t want anybody to stick up for him, since he firmly believed that he could stick up for himself.
Goldie revealed to Bryan & David that she overheard the family of 3 insulting them at the outlet mall. She felt extremely guilty for not defending them. Later in the episode, Goldie, Bryan, and David headed to the hospital for their first ultrasound! The fetus has a heartbeat, and is healthy!
Wilbur, Wilbur’s mother, Shania, Goldie, and Nana held a meeting at Shania’s school with her teacher. The teacher confessed that she should’ve never agreed to have Nana pick up Shania from school. Wilbur’s mother (Edi Patterson) said she already had “the talk” with Wilbur, and Wilbur is now very well aware of where babies come from.
Nana confronted Goldie:
Nana: “Your daughter is about to wade into the deep end of the sexual pool, and she does not know how to swim!.... I was a 34-year-old grandmother!”
Then, Wilbur attempted to hit on Nana.
The second to last scene took place at the gym. David and the guy that he punched were both banned from that specific gym... forever.
Thereafter, David realized that he wasn’t living life to the fullest, and he didn’t want to be a Debbie Downer anymore. He gifted Bryan with a baby’s tracksuit. David said to Bryan, “You were right. I need to learn to let joy in my life.”
Shania handed back the “crop top” that she wore to school. She said to Bryan, “I have to give you back the baby clothes. We agreed it’s a little too whorish. I also got me my first heartbreak. Please help me...”
The next episode airs Tuesday, 9/25, at 9:30pm ET on NBC.
