The New Normal - Season 1 Episode 2 - Recap - Sofa’s Choice
Fall series The New Normal returned tonight with another hilarious episode, “Sofa’s Choice.” This second episode proved to be just as promising as the pilot.
Goldie—David and Bryan’s surrogate—took a pregnancy test during the pilot episode. Did her P-test turn out to be positive or negative?
Find out here:

The New Normal is directed by Glee executive producer Ryan Murphy. In the pilot episode, a gay couple—David and Bryan—decided to have a baby. They agreed upon having David as the biological father, and Goldie as the surrogate mother (they met Goldie through a firm called “Expanding Families”).
Goldie—whom already has a 9-year-old daughter of her own named Shania—just left her husband, Clay, because she walked in on him sleeping with another woman. Goldie also has an overbearing grandmother (whom she refers to as “Nana”) named Jane. Jane’s character is vastly similar to Letitia Darling from Dirty Sexy Money.
Bryan also has an assistant named Rocky who is portrayed by the hilarious Glee guest-star NeNe Leakes.
Episode 2 kicked off with Rocky (NeNe Leakes) informing Bryan (Andrew Rannells) that somebody colored on his “exquisite leather antique” sofa. Rocky assumed it was Goldie’s daughter Shania (Bebe Wood) who drew a silly face on the sofa IN BLACK SHARPIE. Bryan was visibly upset over the sofa tagging, “I have OCD, you know. Obsessive Chic Disorder.” [By the way, Ryan Murphy is a GREAT writer and producer. His scripts are hilarious!]
The pregnancy test that Goldie (Georgia King) took in the pilot episode turned out to be negative. David (Justin Bartha)—being a long-time gynecologist—asked Goldie to come by his office. He believed Goldie might’ve taken the urine test a little too early (and that could’ve been the reason as to why the P-test came out negative). David performed a blood test on Goldie instead, just to double-check if she was pregnant or not pregnant.
When Bryan let Goldie know about the sofa tagging, Goldie wondered, “Do you think Shania’s acting out by drawing on your couch? Am I a terrible mom?” Bryan and David didn’t think so.
Flashback to the first time that David and Bryan met: They met at a bar. Bryan got stood up by former N’Sync star Lance Bass, so he asked David to sit on the bar-stool beside him. Back then, David wore glasses and Bryan had hair that literally went up to the sky. For a moment there, David took off his glasses... and voila, Bryan fell in love with David, “Good God! No wonder you keep those things (eyes) sheathed. They’re the color of Picasso’s most overrated crater.... or a box from Tiffany’s.”
Bryan confronted Shania about the sofa tagging. “You colored on my expensive couch and I am very upset,” said Bryan. Shania revealed that it was actually Jane/Nana (Ellen Barkin) who colored on the couch.
In an effort to re-enact their first meeting, David and Bryan went out to a bar. Bryan mentioned that David was dressed as “one of Madonna’s old boyfriends.” At the bar, they got hit on by a male teenager which prompted Bryan to say, “We’re old enough to be your fathers! Are we cougars?” David and Bryan both agreed that they didn’t enjoy the bar scene anymore, so they left the bar to drop by Goldie and Shania’s home, instead.
Later, Bryan and Shania had a deep conversation about how Shania felt a little “different” to her peers. Bryan consoled her by telling her that she’s just at that age where she doesn’t feel like she fits in anywhere. Bryan then went on to say, “Don’t be afraid to be who you are Shania, because you’re spectacular.... EXCEPT WHEN YOU LIE.”
Towards the end of the episode, Goldie’s soon-to-be-ex-husband, Clay (Jayson Blair) dropped by Goldie’s home. He was spitting out B.S. about wanting to “get back” with her. Actually, Jane/Nana told him exactly what to say (Nana’s the evil plotter/antagonist in this series). Recognizing the B.S., Goldie said to Clay, “I want a divorce.”
Finally, David received a call from the hospital. The blood test came out positive, and the pregnancy stick was wrong! “We’re officially pregnant! Group hug!,” said David.
Congrats David, Bryan, Goldie, and Shania!
The next episode airs Tuesday, 9/18, at 9:30pm ET on NBC. Tune in then! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
