The New Normal - Episode 6 - Recap - Bryanzilla

In the sixth episode of The New Normal, “Bryanzilla,” Wilbur ‘pretend-proposes’ to Shania, and David proposes to Bryan for real (as the title of the episode suggests).

Tonight’s episode also featured another guest appearance from Rocky’s younger brother, Clint. (It’s always good to see him on screen!)

After only 3.5 weeks of courtship, Wilbur (Isaak Presley) pretend-proposed to Shania (Bebe Wood) with a ring made out of candy! Shania’s mother, Goldie (Georgia King), designed a wedding dress made out of leaves. They even invited pretend bridesmaids and pretend best men to the wedding ceremony! Clint (Sterling Sulieman) played the role of the pretend minister, and Rocky (NeNe Leakes) played the role of the pretend poet. (She read aloud lyrics from Nicki Minaj’s songbook). The pretend wedding ceremony went sour when other school-aged girls revealed that Wilbur pretend-married them as well.... so Wilbur wasn’t being sincere when he said that Shania makes him want to be a better boy.

Wilbur: “Sorry Shania. You can take the player out of the game, but you can’t take the game out of the player.”

We also learned how Goldie’s ex-husband, Clay (Jayson Blair), proposed to Goldie. He asked her to marry him at the bowling alley.

Clay: “If I throw a strike, will you marry me, baby?”

Clay threw a gutter ball, but Goldie agreed to marry him anyway.

9 years ago: Clay proposing to Goldie

Goldie asked Nana (Ellen Barkin) to return home to Ohio for good because she was growing tired of Nana’s constant discriminatory remarks.

Goldie: “I need to protect her (Shania) from you (Nana).”

In return, Nana stated that she’s not going anywhere and that she’ll never leave Goldie and Shania like the way Goldie’s mother left the family.

Before Shania’s pretend-wedding took place, David (Justin Bartha) revealed to Bryan (Andrew Rannells) that he doesn’t believe in marriage... but he does believe in having a family. However, Shania’s fake wedding struck a cord in David. He didn’t fully understand the meaning of commitment until he saw Shania getting heart-broken at the ceremony. David proposed to Bryan in front of Goldie and her pregnant belly because he wanted their baby to “witness” the proposal.

David: “I want our baby to say, ‘I was there when my daddies got engaged.’ ”

I thought this episode was more tolerable than Episodes 4 & 5. I actually thought it was adorable of Shania to have a pretend wedding!
