The New Normal - Episode 5 - Recap - Nanagasm

In the fifth episode of The New Normal, “Nanagasm,” Shania celebrates an early quinceanera, David’s mother Prancis comes into town, and Nana meets a new man (hence, the title of the episode).

Bryan & Prancis’ painful relationship:

As soon as David (Justin Bartha), Bryan (Andrew Rannells), Goldie (Georgia King), and Shania (Bebe Wood) got back from the beach, David said his mother Prancis will be stopping by the neighborhood. Goldie & Shania were excited to meet Prancis, but Bryan wasn’t. He doesn’t have a good relationship with his mother-in-law. This sarcastic comment showcased his ill feelings for Prancis: “I’m excited! I’m gonna go upstairs, change (clothes), and eat a pill the size of a cake.”

When David & Bryan met up with Prancis at a restaurant, Bryan was less-than-enthused. David, of course, quickly rose to his mother’s defense:

David: “She’s my mom, Bryan.”

Bryan: “Well, I’m your baby’s mom....kinda.”

David & Bryan revealed to Prancis that their having a baby, and that Goldie is their surrogate mother.

Later in the episode, Bryan and Prancis confronted each other about their excruciatingly painful relationship. Bryan stated that ever since Prancis’ husband left her, she’s turned David into her “boyfriend.” Prancis, in return, stated that Bryan only hates her because of his issues with his own mother:

Bryan: “Ever since your husband left you, you turned your little boy into your boyfriend!”

Prancis: “I guess you need to work out your own Mommy issues, and stop taking your crap out on me!”

Prancis’ comment affected Bryan so much that he called his mother. (This marked the first time Bryan has called his mother since his parents’ divorce).

Nana meets a new man:

A younger man hit on Nana/Jane (Ellen Barkin) at the bar. This eventually led to a make-out session and a good time in bed. On the following day, Nana reported seizure-like symptoms to David (since he’s a gynecologist). She had an orgasm, not a seizure.

Despite her age, Nana embraced her sexuality and slept with the same guy again. Right after they had sex, he confessed to Nana that he’s only interested in having sex with her, but he has no interest in dating her:

Nana’s guy #1: “I don’t want to date you. I only want to bang you.”

Nana quickly ditched this guy for a better-looking, taller, and fitter guy (Nana’s guy #2).

Shania celebrates her quinceanera (6 years early):

Shania might only be 9 years old, but she wanted to celebrate her quinceanera several years early. Goldie, Bryan, David, Ellen, and Prancis attended the event (which included Mexican food and a pinatta).

I think this episode was the worst one thus far. It was incredibly B-O-R-I-N-G. I nearly dozed off while watching this episode. I didn’t even laugh or giggle once tonight. In my opinion, this show has just gone downhill.... I thought the first two episodes were funny, but this show is just a train-wreck now. However, I continue to watch this show for Justin Bartha because I admire his acting abilities. I think he’s a great actor!
