The Lying Game - Season 2 Episode 6 - Recap and Review - Catch Her in the Lie

The Lying Game is oddly a show that thrives off of utter confusion, and “Catch Her in the Lie” was the most baffling episode put up in a while. Thus, I loved it! Sutton (Alexandra Chando) gives such great reaction shots! Director: “You’re kidnapped and trapped in the backseat of a limo… Go!” Here's to hoping the back ten episodes of Season 2 get picked up soon because I… need… to… know! Who are all of these people and why do we care? Well, we just do. I still want an evil twin… or am I the evil twin?

The episode opened with a very distressed Laurel (Allie Gonino) bawling to Emma on the roof of the hospital. Having just discovered that she probably likes a girl she never even knew existed over the sister she’d grown up with for sixteen years, she was adequately peeved. Not knowing whether or not Laurel could bear the burden of the infamous “twin secret,” Emma and Thayer (Christian Alexander) watched from his car as the Mercers left with Laurel the next day. Had Sutton realized that Emma blew their secret? Had Laurel already started running her mouth?

Ethan Whitehorse (Blair Redford) is the luckiest girl in the world. I thought it was clever of Sutton to send Whitehorse flowers inviting him to the Flip-Side Dance while he benched in the middle of the desert. Isn’t that kind of badass? I mean, both sending a dude flowers and bench pressing in the middle of the scorching Arizona desert are badass.

Thayer decided it’d be best to move out of his family’s house and into the clubhouse now that he’d decided to settle back in town. Upon moving in, he bumped into Ethan who was unaware that Thayer and Emma had been made official. On the other hand, Ethan’s re-coupling with Sutton was also news; the difference being that Thayer couldn't care less about Sutton, while Ethan clearly still cares for Emma. Whitehorse began to pick up on the dividing of teams here, and being on Team Sutton kind of sucks.

Back at the Mercer’s, Laurel got a signature anti-pep talk from Sutton, who was convinced she’d been stalking Jordan (Ryan Rottman) the night of the accident. Once Sutton sauntered off, Emma emerged from the dust of the back of Sutton’s closet to thank Laurel for keeping their secret. Truth be told, anyone who knows the “twin secret” could be heading to an early grave. I think Emma hooked Laurel with her final L.Y.L.A.S. affirmation. Meanwhile, Sutton was busy being rejected by Ethan in the lobby of Mercer Manor. The raincloud of Emma rolled back into town, so Ethan is so over Sutton, not that she cares whether or not anyone actually likes her.

Theresa (Yara Martinez) and Dan (Tyler Christopher) still found themselves in the middle of Derrick’s murder case, although he’d been officially kicked off. Alec (Adrian Pasdar) continued to persuade Theresa to trust him, which meant continuing to keep Dan in the dark on the secrets she’d been informed of surrounding the twins. At the station, the two ran into Derrick’s mother, who managed to uncover new evidence while digging through her garden. Derrick had been stashing $20k. As a small-time drug dealer, he’d never make that kind of cash. Meaning, someone had been paying the dufus to keep quiet.

Kristin (Helen Slater) had met with a lawyer, her favorite pastime, and managed to uncover that Ted (Andy Buckley) had been secretly withdrawing money from their bank account over an extended period of time. The sum amassed to… $20k. Figuring he’d paid for another affair with Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter) via small withdrawn increments, Kristin hammered one more nail into Ted’s coffin. On The Lying Game, that could end up meaning a literal coffin. Laurel was, needless to say, pissed to hear that her father was even more of a fraud than she’d realized.

Rebecca still has Jordan under her thumb, as it became clear this episode that she’d spent a significant amount of time and money cleaning up his rich-boy messes and legal fees. She commanded him to break the rules and ask Laurel to the Flip-Side Dance, so that he could probe for information surrounding her snooping. Having to set aside his feelings for Mads (Alice Greczyn), Jordan played it cool and barely let Laurel get a word in edgewise when he “accepted” her invite. A very confused Mads was rejected seconds later.

Thayer, realizing that Sutton’s Achilles’ heel is Ethan, pressured Emma to reconnect with him. If she could reel him onto their side, it would be easier to manipulate Sutton. At his place, Emma revealed all that she and Thayer uncovered surrounding Rebecca and Sutton’s alliance. Ethan seemed, once again, stuck in the middle and all alone. Thankfully, he now has Laurel to complain with. Laurel, not knowing who to turn to, visited Ethan on her own accord. Venting about her mixed emotions surrounding the whole ordeal, the two agreed that they admittedly cared for Emma.

At Thayer’s new bachelor pad, Laurel finally agreed to officially hop on board. Thayer’s proposed plan was for Emma to pose as Sutton at the dance in order to fool perpetual chaperone Rebecca into divulging information surrounding her motives.

Poor Sutton… All dressed up and nowhere to go but the back of a limousine. Ethan managed to woo Sutton well enough while Kristin was watching, but once they got out to the limo he’d ordered, she found herself trapped! With Thayer in the driver’s seat, and her phone confiscated, she was taken out of play for a while, as Emma and Ethan attempted to trick Rebecca. The slow dancing between Ethan and Emma could prove lethal to their relationships. It was a nice moment for them to rekindle some fire before their attempted takedown of Rebecca. Strange, Emma searched for her birth mother for so long only to find that she could be a murder who was just not that into her.

Laurel seemed so over Jordan, who I’m guessing, thought he was charming her. After some confidence boosting from her father, Mads decided to throw herself together in a jiff and head to the dance stag. Good for you, Mads! After spying Laurel and Jordan, though, she broke and decided to mope outside, all prettied up and alone. Jordan attempted to talk to her, but it seemed she’d gotten too fed up. Unable to explain that he was using Laurel at Rebecca’s request, Mads was just left upset. Inside, Laurel explained that she wasn’t interested in ruining their friendship over a boy, either. She was just milking Jordan for information, as he’d attempted to do to her! Realizing that she’d been left in the cold, most likely for supporting her father, Mads confronted Emma, realizing she’d become a lot more like Sutton as a result of attempting to play this game.

After learning that Ethan had overheard Theresa and Dan talking about Derrick’s money, Emma put two and two together to discover that it was most likely not Rebecca who killed Derrick… it was probably Ted. Ted could very well be her biological father, and he could have been paying Derrick to keep quiet surrounding their secret. Blackmail! And the amounts match up!

Sutton, having freed herself from Thayer outside of the car with a swift kick to the crotch and a hop into the limo driver’s seat, quickly alerted Rebecca to the plan to corner her. Once she reached the dance, and unaware of what Emma had just discovered, Sutton tried to reason with Rebecca, even going as far as to suggest they bring in Emma. Rebecca adamantly refused her idea. She makes the plans. She’s wearing zebra print because she’s a villainess, and that’s what female evildoers wear. They dress Kristin in pilgrim frocks and pajamas they attempt to pass off as clothes.

While this was all going down, Alec decided that, for whatever reason, it would be a great idea to surprise Kristin with a bottle of wine. Kristin, having suffered enough, decided to take a night off from liars to booze it a little. Clearly, she still has feelings for Alec. He nearly kissed her, teased her really, before leaving. Mission accomplished? Well, Ted and Rebecca managed to dance on the golf course outside the dance. I guess Ted doesn’t loathe Rebecca for ruining everything anymore? Party?

After getting dumped by Sutton for duping her, Ethan managed to bump into none other than Mads moping by her lonesome near the pool. Mads, hitting the bottle yet again, decided to share with Ethan. What becomes of the broken-hearted? They drown their sorrows until the sun comes up, talking about how much everybody else blows, and building romantic chemistry. This could be an interesting new couple, if they’re actually planning on going there.

The episode closed with Emma and Thayer finally sealing the deal, after discussing… Ethan? Alright, Emma!
