FOX and 20th TV are still in negotiations on a prospective fifth season of Glee, but the ax has lowered on the musical dramedy's sister series.
Oxygen has decided not to move forward with a third season of The Glee Project, reports TVLine.
Although the cable network declined to comment, sources confirm that a number of factors — not the least of which is that Glee itself hasn’t been renewed yet — contributed to the decision to shelve the reality spin-off.Ratings also likely played a part. Despite favorable reviews and a passionate following, the series was a modest performer for Oxygen.
The reality competition series offered contestants the chance to win a seven-episode arc on the hit FOX show. In season one, Damian McGinty and Samuel Larsen were both proclaimed the winners, each earning a seven-episode arc, while runners-up Lindsay Pearce and Alex Newell each received two-episode storylines. In season two, Blake Jenner was declared the winner, with runner-up Ali Stoker also getting the opportunity to appear on Glee this season.
No word yet on whether Ryan Murphy might try to find the show a home on another network.
