The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairytale

So Fantasia Barrino gets to do make-out scenes in her own TV-movie, and Jennifer Hudson gets the role of a lifetime in Dreamgirls. Oh well.

I've included the controversial part of the movie where the Idol producers allegedly ask Fantasia to withdraw from the competition. This is interesting because this bookends the whole movie. So Idol wanted her out, and then the movie shows why -- basically, Fantasia's less then pleasant experience with being swindled, lack of education, rape and teenage pregnancy.

Unfortunately, aside from showing the facts of what happened in Fantasia's life and winning American Idol which supposedly changed it, we don't witness any change in Fantasia as a person. The movie sadly emphasizes that you probably need to win American idol in order for your life to be better, which of couse we all know is not true.

My personal stand is this: I was drawn to Fantasia because of her talent, and I continue to support her because of it. I did not vote for her because she was a single mother on welfare, and I don't remember her on American Idol because she was the single mother on welfare. Fantasia and her handlers should get over it and let her concentrate on making music. This TV-movie is pointless because I was not inspired by Fantasia at all. I was more inspired with her singing Summertime for two minutes. I know it sounds harsh, but everyone has a sob story. Unfortunately, Fantasia has decided to use her sob story in a TV-movie meant to entertain-inform-or-inspire. So sadly, judging it from an entertainment standpoint and nothing personal, even if teenage pregnancy is traumatic, it's not as dramatic as let's say not being able to talk for 10 years then suddenly being able to sing like an angel. So enough of this already, and let's hear that second album Fantasia!

Real fans have absolutely no interest in this. Fantasia is addressing her detractors -- telling them, "look at what I've overcome" -- which is counter-productive. We're already convinced that she's something.
