The Event - Series Premiere

The Event Season Premiere 01-2010-09-20.jpg

The Event tells a story of a global conspiracy at the hands of a mysterious group we know nothing about. I didn't know much about the show going in other than that description seriously reminded me of FlashForward (which I loved). I did sense some similarities throughout the episode to FlashForward, including the flashback timelines they were using to tell the story. It was a little slow and confusing for awhile but hopefully it picks up the pace. This show has a unique quality about it that has potential to be way more interesting than the crime and medical dramas that take up my tv guide.

Our main guy is Sean Walker, seemingly innocent, who takes his girlfriend on a cruise where he plans to propose. In between enjoying the beach Sean saves a girl from drowning because her boyfriend conveniently can't save her because he has a cast. Big deal. Couldn't he have jumped in anyway? I mean if her life was really in jeopardy that seems kind of a lame excuse. To thank Sean and his girlfriend Leila, they invite the two of them to spend the rest of the vacation with them snorkeling and such. If I sound doubtful of this couple's intentions I am. The girl half of the couple gave some creepy stares and the ominous music makes me wonder.

When Sean heads back to the ship after snorkeling with said creepy girl, he finds that his room key no longer works, his girlfriend has disappeared from the ship altogether, and the crew has no record of him ever boarding the ship. Uhoh. He understandably freaks out and the next time we see him he's on a plane headed for disaster. Leila's house is invaded by gunmen who take her little sister and (I think) shoot her mother. Her dad ends up piloting the plane Sean is on with the intention of assassinating the President in exchange for his daughter's safety. It was pretty hard to see Luke from Gilmore Girls hijacking a plane.

I'm going to assume the President knows too much. When he finds out about a top secret prison holding 97 prisoners for mysterious reasons, he sets out to visit and find out as much about it as he can. Much to the annoyance of the men working around him, he wants to close the prison and release the prisoners. They beg him to change his mind but before he can do anything about it, they look up and a plane is headed for them. Right before the plane hits its intended target, it disappears through something resembling a black hole. Either way it disappears out of the sky. A woman from the mysterious prison tells the President "They saved us." But who?

I'm curious who the woman from the prison is and what she knows about "The Event" that is coming. After watching this episode, I'm willing to give it another shot to really keep me hooked. So far I'm pretty confused and not even sure what The Event is. I'm only sure it's not a blackout.
