The Event - Everything Will Change - Mid-season Finale Recap

Since their showdown, I was starting to think Thomas and Sophia might start to patch things up. Not so. Sophia still doesn't trust Thomas and knows he's up to something. Thomas knows she knows. To him, that's a signal to put his plans into motion immediately. It's quite a shocking plan. Thomas has been hoarding his money and used it to create a nuclear missile. He's covered all his tracks and plans to set it off from a tribal area in Russia where no one can get to it in time. Too many diplomatic boundaries in the way will work in his favor.
The president is panicking over not knowing who wants to assassinate him and the new threat of a nuclear missile headed his way. The Prez and his team scramble to stop the missile from launching and killing tons of people. They even go so far as to threaten Russia with war even though it's not technically their fault. It's the nerves talking because essentially, the US is powerless to do anything if and when this thing launches. An entire part of the country would be vulnerable. Before they can come up with a plan, Thomas makes sure the missile is launched. The US team hurries to figure out where the thing is headed and it turns out not to be a nuclear missile at all, but a communication satellite. Who is Thomas trying to communicate with? No one on Earth. He's trying to communicate with his home. What?? Is there anyone even left there?
When the guy Sean attacked last week wakes up, Sean threatens to kill him unless he tells what he knows. The guy laughs in Sean's face because he knows that Sean could never pull the trigger. This is true. But Sean CAN take the old age injection and shove it in his neck. He does and the guy ages super fast and eventually dies. What the heck was in that syringe? Why would they want to test to make someone older? Before he croaks, the guy gives them the name of a psych hospital where the girls are held. Sean and Leila investigate by posing as family members of a patient. There are no children in sight and they get themselves kicked out before long. Leila notices some clues that fit into everything they've learned and is convinced her sister is somewhere in the building.
They go back at night and find the creepy hallway where the children were kept. The place has been cleared out and almost all of the files have been burned. Leila is sure her sister was there but there are no clues to explain where she might be now. In my opinion Leila has bigger things to worry about when her and Sean discover a file on her father that shows he hasn't aged since the early 50's.
What the heck?? Is he an alien? Is Leila an alien hybrid? Is that why they're experimenting on the girls? Because they're the children of men who don't age? And if all Thomas wanted to do was communicate, why did he say tons of people were going to die? What is The Event?? Don't cancel this NBC before we can find out.
The Event returns in February.
