The Bachelorette Desiree - Episode 6 - Recap
Desiree's eight guys are down to five in this sixth episode of The Bachelorette Season 9. They're in Barcelona, Spain for the week! Olé. Keep reading my recap, here.
Drew's One-on-One
Des thinks her relationship with Drew has gone slower than the others. Regardless, she still has a great time on the date. They drink from the La Rambla drinking fountain: if you drink from the fountain, you promise to come back to Barcelona. Well that's a good tourism strategy! Make people spend money to come back or else karma will bite back. Drew tells Des that his dad is his hero because he's a recovering alcoholic who dedicates his life to helping others recover. And... he unfortunately has cancer. Aw.Not soon after they sit down for dinner, Drew decides to surprise her and leads her outside to make out with him against a wall. There's the shaky camera to further convey the element of surprise. We see the swarm of cameramen awkwardly crowd around them. I guess they get used to the cameras afar a while...
Drew and Des going at it.
Drew gets a rose. Right after his rose is pinned on his lapel, he begins to tell Des about James. Des smiles through her tears and thanks him for telling her. Not surprised that Drew waited until the very end; of course he wouldn't want to screw up his chances of receiving a rose!
Group Date: Brooks, Chris, Kasey, Michael, James, Juan Pablo
The guys travel to the home turf of RCD Espanyol, a famous soccer team, and all of the guys are pumped. Most comfortable of all is Juan Pablo, who used to play professional soccer. What can't Juan Pablo do? Brooks translates Juan Pablo's name as "you have no chance, I'm going out with Desiree," which sounds pretty accurate. After they practice a bit, Des leaves and then returns with a group of five girls dressed in red soccer uniforms. "Listen girl scouts, we're about to bake some cookies," Brooks jokingly threatens. Brooks is just zingin' it out today! The girls are actually professional players, and unsurprisingly, as in all of these kinds of group dates, they're really good.
Unsurprisingly as well, the guys are hilarious, cheering each other on with ostentatious celebration dances to intimidate the other team and just have fun. After the score is tied 2-2, James begins to like, run away from the ball, and shot after shot leaves the girls up 10-2. James is pretty much painted as the outcast of the group, which sets up the big argument to come later in the episode.
Chris is trying to stay out of the drama with James and wants to focus on his relationship with Des instead. Good man! That night, Des reads a poem aloud for Chris that she wrote on a postcard for him, since Chris previously shared several of his poems with her. Aw, that's really sweet.
As always, the obligatory Chris pic.
Later that night, the whole James situation gets even worse with the guys. Kasey, with Chris and Michael sitting on the couch next to him, confronts James as he walks into the room. Kasey tells him that he overheard his conversation with Mikey and calls it disrespectful. James denies it and says he was just kidding around. Chris tries to shush everyone for like five minutes but keeps getting talked over. James thinks Kasey is putting words into his mouth and then leaves, frustrated.
Kasey tells Des more of what James said… about how he's not worried about his job because he'll get a bunch of girls after this show is over.
At the end of the date, Des says she won't be handing out a rose and asks the guys to leave so she can talk to James alone. He completely throws Mikey under the bus and tells her that Mikey said all of the things that the guys mentioned earlier. He swears on his dad that he never said any of those things and accuses the other guys of ganging up on him. Oh, please. It's nothing to how you bullied Ben earlier this season. Karma's a b. James is full-out crying now. It's tough for Des, too, because she trusts the guys but also trusts James and doesn't know what to think.
James trying to think of what excuses he'll say next.
Michael says that not once during the argument did he say that he cares about her. The guys are sitting in a circle talking about him, and guess who walks through the door? It's James, who still hasn't been eliminated yet.
Zak's One-on-One
Zak is bummed out that Des still might be emotionally distracted from last night, but any distractedness she might have felt on the inside didn't show during the date. They go to Sant Lluc, an arts society. They dress up in smocks in an artist studio, first drawing portraits of a man and then drawing portraits of each other. Then a male model comes in, stands on the pedestal in the middle of the room, and drops his robe. Yep, he's naked. The look on Zak's face is priceless. Then, Zak asks to give her a couple of minutes. He walks out in a robe and… drops it. He poses in his tighty whities, and Des thinks it's hilarious.
Zak thinks he's still single because he's adventurous and independent. He gets a rose. She loves that he's so adventurous and curious, because that's what she wants in a guy.
Lots of kissing going on this episode (and this season in general), as you can tell.
The James Situation...
That night, James talks one-on-one with Drew. Drew lays it down and questions why James isn't completely focused on Des. Boom. Really, though, the guys shouldn't get too caught up in it. I don't think they're being 100% altruistic, wanting to save Des from getting hurt. They probably also want another guy to get out so they have a higher chance of staying in. But those are just my thoughts. The next morning, Des visits the guys and pulls James away. Still, though, she doesn't send him home. She doesn't know what to think, because she did have feelings for him and doesn't know who to trust. Kasey makes a great point when he says that he shouldn't be thinking about other girls when he's dating one girl.
"If James gets a rose tonight, I think the group is just going to collectively ____ themselves," Michael deadpans.
Rose Ceremony
There are only three roses give out at the rose ceremony after Drew and Zak previously received safety. The three guys who receive roses are Chris, Brooks and... Michael. The eliminated guys are Juan Pablo, Kasey, and… James. What the hell, Michael? He should've been gone last week. I'm not saying Juan Pablo, Kasey, or James should have stayed instead, since Des didn't seem to have much of a relationship with the former two. But, we all know that Michael's a goner next week.
In the exit limo, James thinks that he was bullied and couldn't believe he was the one to come off to be such a bad person.
Next week, they go to Madeira, an island off the coast of Portugal. Very nice! It looks like there's more drama coming next week... potentially with Drew? But really, when is there not drama on this show? Let me know what you thought of this episode, especially James: #lovehim or #leavehim? Thanks for reading!
