With the July 1, 2015 release date set in stone, Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor is looking into setting the cast for his big budget Terminator reboot.

Taylor is reportedly preparing to begin testing actors and actresses within the next week for the high-profile project from Paramount, Annapurna Pictures and Skydance Productions.

One of the names in contention is Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, whom Taylor directed on the HBO drama. Also under consideration are Brie Larson (The Spectacular Now) and Margot Robbie (About Time). The actresses are vying for the lead role of Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton in the original James Cameron films. The character is the future mother of human resistance savior John Connor, who leads humanity in the fight against the machines.

Of course, John Connor also had a father, so Taylor is currently searching for the man who will play a young Kyle Reese, the character sent back in time by the human resistance to protect Sarah from the Terminator: Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) is currently being considered for the role, although no formal commitment has been made.

Most amusingly, the reboot will retain one significant element from the original films: Arnold Schwarzenegger will return as a Terminator robot tasked with protecting Sarah Connor as she grows up. No word on if he'll be the antagonist Terminator as well, but the reboot is already beginning to take shape, as John Connor himself will also apparently appear in the film. And Taylor is aiming high with his casting hopes: the director reportedly wants Tom Hardy for the role. However, a meeting has yet to take place between the director and the former Bane of The Dark Knight Rises.

The reboot Terminator would be the fifth installment in the film franchise, beginning with 1984's The Terminator and continuing through 2009’s Terminator Salvation. Production company Annapurna acquired the franchise rights in May 2011, and put the project into development with Skydance and Paramount in June, with plans in place for a trilogy.

So who would you want to see in the lead roles? Sound off in the comments!
