Teen Wolf - Recap: Was Derek Put to Sleep?
Episode 3 of Season 3 of MTV’s Teen Wolf surely shook things up. All Scott McCall needs at this point is for some awful virgin-loving demon to rise from the earth. Did Derek make the ultimate sacrifice?
MTV "Teen Wolf"
Episode 3 opened with two young children playfully catching fireflies in the woods at night. A score reminiscent of one that would play over a Steven Spielberg film played over their frolicking. What a lovely scene that was set, yet not a parent in sight. The gargantuan Boyd nearly tore the two in half, but as it turns out, fireflies hate werewolves almost as much as vampires do. An angry swarm of the bugs distracted Boyd while the boy and girl made their way to the safety of Scott McCall’s arms. Meanwhile, Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) had been searching another stretch of the woods alone. The power and speed of the moon-juiced wolves far outmatched their own, so the two decided to partner up.
At this point we the viewers loved the concept of, well, super friendly bugs. There’s a first time for everything! Of course, that first time was completely trumped by the scene that would follow. A young female couple transformed a boring old tent into what looked like a five-star hotel room. Seriously, I’d be afraid to light one candle in a tent, and there seemed to be dozens. “If the tent is a'rockin’, don’t come a'knockin’” has officially been replaced with, “If the ten is a'rockin’, you go on fire.” Not that the two ever got the opportunity to get down and dirty. A swarm of cricket-like black insects began to collect outside the tent, driving one of the girls to run screaming like a wild woman through the trees. Eventually, the swarm devoured her without even leaving so much as a bone or two. The girl’s partner stood outside the tent calling out and searching, only find herself targeted by a crazed Cora and subsequently rescued by Scott and Isaac (Daniel Sharman). Later, the girl’s tale of a she-wolf attacking her would be ruled inconclusive due to the fact that she’d dropped a bit of ecstasy prior to lighting her ten thousand candles.

Meanwhile, Lydia decided to cap off her night of screaming like a lunatic with a trip to the store. Wherever she was heading, I’m not sure. Maybe a 7-11? Poof! Lydia stepped out of her car and into the scene of a grizzly murder. How she ended up at a public pool in the middle of the night remained a mystery, but the lifeguard on duty certainly wasn’t telling anyone. Lydia followed up a 911 call with a call to Stiles (Dylan O’Brien), who examined the scene, noticing a purity ring, before informing Scott’s pack that Boyd and Cora had most likely killed a boy. Derek wouldn’t buy it. Even with super speed, the two could never had made it that far in time to murder the boy. Scott, on the other hand, refused to consider anything else. If you ask me, the fact that the body was that of a lifeguard propped up perfectly in his chair was the first tip off that something was amiss. Giant tip off number two had to be that the man was watching over an empty pool in the middle of the night. Nobody found that the least bit odd?
Allison Argent (Crystal Reed) sat moping in her car following Scott’s revelation that her dead mother took a bite from Derek because she was in the process of murdering Scott. (What a doozy of a sentence!) This was all revealed via flashback. In addition, it’s official. R.I.P. Erica! What a bummer to not get an awesome death sequence on a show with countless supernatural and horror elements.

Scott, thinking on his toes, decided to pay a very unlikely individual a visit. In hopes of capturing Boyd and Cora without killing the pair, Scott’s last-ditch effort was to spring a surprise plea for help on Allison’s father, Chris (JR Bourne). Following the absolute devastation and destruction of his entire family due to the art of werewolf hunting, Mr. Argent was sorely against lending McCall a helping hand. What a nice attitude adjustment towards werewolf-kind, though! Still, Scott can be clever, as we’ve come to learn. Asking for the small consolation favor of a ride across town, Scott lead Argent straight to the scene of the horrific poolside murder. That was that; Argent hopped on board the town-wide game of deadly hide and seek.

Allison got all of the mopes and pouts out of her system before starting what I’m going to hope is a transformation into Katniss Everdeen, or, better yet, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As her father coached the boys on using their heightened wolf-like senses and human intuition to outwit, outlast, and outplay the mega-wolves, Allison readied her bow for battle. It seemed like she kept herself busy setting quite a few traps and spinning her knife, though none of that ended up mattering. McCall’s gang decided to wrangle the duo of monsters into the empty high school boiler room after a solid suggestion from Isaac. Also, Isaac… pulling out the swanky scarf, man.

Stiles walked Lydia all the way back to her bed before she revealed the truth about her time slip situation. The two quickly pieced together that, someway and somehow, the events must be linked to Peter Hale (Ian Bohen), as the last time this happened was due to Peter’s mental manipulation of Lydia in his quest to be resurrected. Here’s what, though; I’m not sure Peter has anything to do with this at this point in time. Lydia was lead to the crime scene, and I’m not so sure murdering in that matter is Peter Hale’s style. Also, Peter seemed to have his hands full attempting to convince Derek to just let Boyd and Cora work out their aggression by ripping apart a few bums and drunks. Derek, for a blink there, seemed to consider his uncle’s suggestion to let Scott stress while the two lived their werewolf lives in “shades of grey.” Guess how many shades of grey there are? You know you thought it...
Following his discussion with Lydia, Stiles skipped over to the hospital after receiving a call from Scott’s mother, Melissa (Melissa Ponzio). Now that Melissa is privy to the werewolf world, she’s incredibly helpful! Apparently, the murder of the lifeguard was not the work of a werewolf at all. The boy had been bludgeoned in the head, strangled by a wire, and found his throat slit clean across. Three fatal wounds matched the corpse of… Heather. Yikes, sorry, Stiles. I was truly hoping you’d get to rescue your little lady-friend. Happy Birthday, Heather? Two virgins murdered in a brutal manner seemed to be a major clue that sent Stiles straight to the living lesbian lover. The woman's girlfriend would surely be the next to show up dead (and she did by the close of Episode 3), much to Stiles’ dismay, but what did it all mean?
The boys struggled to wrangle the two super-wolves into the school on their own, but Isaac managed to catch a glimpse of Allison covertly using flash arrows to herd the duo straight into their trap. She's a woman of mystery now, folks! Watch out, Scott McCall! That little glimmer when the two made eye contact spelled out a new love interest for Allison.

Derek and Scott, by some massive miracle, managed to successfully lock Boyd and Cora in the fortified boiler room after stunning them with fire extinguishers. Now, all they would have to do was wait for the sunrise. The boys got a moment to breathe before Scott noticed something unsettling… a third heartbeat thumping from inside. Derek, of course, would make the selfless decision to sacrifice himself in order to rescue whomever they’d trapped inside with two hungry killing machines. The third heart belonged to the innocent Ms. Blake (Haley Webb), Scott’s new English teacher. Derek took the lashing of a lifetime from Boyd and Cora until the sun did eventually rise. Ms. Blake was left unscathed, thankfully. For a moment it seemed as though Hale wouldn't make it out alive. Derek played the gallant dark knight to Teen Wolf’s freshest damsel in distress. Finally… Derek Hale has a romance brewing, she-wolves and kanamas! It’s about damn time.
Season 3 Episode 3 closed with Stiles’ informing Scott of his discovery at the hospital. These murders weren’t random in any case. These were virgin sacrifices. I’m hoping Stiles leads the mission of solving this latest Teen Wolf mystery with Lydia firmly at his side. She can play Watson to Stiles’ Sherlock! Plus, could Teen Wolf make any smarter decision than partnering Lydia with Peter Hale as well? He obviously knows the ins and outs of what is going on with her, and this trio working together would spell both compelling emotional drama between Lydia and Peter and comedic gold between Hale and Stilinski.
What did you think of Teen Wolf, Season 3 Episode 3, “Fireflies”? Now that Argent revealed to Scott that fireflies from their area don’t normally glow, what do you supposed is going on? Who is sacrificing virgins and who is receiving said sacrifices? Are you happy to see Allison back on the right track? Would you like to see Allison try out her chemistry with Isaac? Has Derek Hale finally found love?
