Team Eventing Jumping Final Equestrian - London 2012 Olympics - Medal Results
The Team Eventing Equestrian competition involves three phases, which includes Dressage, Cross Country and Jumping. Today's medal results at the London 2012 Olympics were determined in the Jumping event final.
I love horses and the horses in this event are absolutely beautiful as well as being remarkable athletes. The jumping event is a combination of grace, speed and power that requires a perfect marriage between the abilities of horse and rider. The main focus of the event is clearing the numerous jumping obstacles on the course, but the event is also timed, so speed is a factor as well, with riders needing to finish the course in less than 83 seconds to avoid additional penalties.
Knocking down rails on jumps results in penalty points. Much like in golf, the lower your score, the better your finish. The top 25 riders from the team competition get to compete in the individual final.
With the British team in contention for their first gold medal of the London Olympics, the crowd went wild as British Rider Mary King turned in a penalty free ride, but first place Germany kept pace with a penalty free ride of their own. With one rider to go Germany maintained about a 13 point lead over third place Great Britain.
Kristina Cook guaranteed Britain at least a silver with a 1 point time penalty on her ride. Ingrid Klimke incurred 9 points on her ride, making it close, but her performance was good enough to secure the gold for the German team. The U.S. team finished a respectable seventh. What an exciting finish!
Results:
Gold: Germany
Silver: Great Britain
Bronze: New Zealand
Congratulations to all the medalists!
