TCAs 2014: HBO Renews 'Girls' For Fourth Season

Season 3 hasn't even premiered yet, but Lena Dunham's Girls already has its future secured.

At the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, HBO announced that it has renewed Girls for a fourth season. Season 4 will film in the summer for air in 2015.

While the announcement was a subdued event, the actual panel for the show was less peaceful. A reporter asked Dunham, "I don't get the purpose of all the nudity on the show, by you particularly," in reference to how the star is frequently naked on the comedy series for no immediately discernible storyline reason.

"It's because it's a realistic expression of what it's like to be alive," Dunham responded. "If you're not into me, that's your problem."

Then things got a little bit out of control, as executive producer Judd Apatow laced into the reporter, saying, "Do you have a girlfriend? Does she like you?" He later added, "This guy looks in the mirror and feels bad about what he sees."

Even executive producer Jenni Konner took offense with the reporter's comment, saying later that the comment sent her into "a rage spiral."

Dunham faced other questions about her character's likability on the series. "People ask 'How can you sympathize with [Hannah],' and I'm like, 'You seem to like Walter White!'"

She makes a good point, and I wonder if the line of questioning doesn't further illustrate the divide between how female TV characters are treated vs. male. Regardless of one's stance, however, the fact remains that Girls is one of HBO's most divisive shows, and while it isn't necessarily a ratings hit, it performs well on HBOGo. It also gets tons of critical and awards recognition, so it makes sense for HBO to keep it around.
