What do Taylor Swift, One Direction, The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder and the late Paul Walker have in common?
They've all made the list of the 20 most charitable celebrities of 2013. Nonprofit organization DoSomething.org compiles this list of the top 20 “Celebs Gone Good” annually: these are the celebs whose generosity has set them apart from the rest of Hollywood, in a big way. So who came out on top?
For the second year in a row, it's Taylor Swift, whose Winter White Gala in London benefiting homeless youths, as well as her $100,000 donation to the Nashville Symphony, has made her the year's most charitable celeb. However, she's not alone in making an impact, as One Direction took the No. 2 spot. The boy band began 2013 by volunteering in Ghana under the banner of Comic Relief, and this would lead to similar charitable acts from individual members of the group. For example, Harry Styles and Liam Payne alone have raised over $800,000 for cancer research in 2013.
The list is packed with celebrities who've made a charitable impact in 2013, as Chime for Change and Goodwill activist Beyoncé is among the top 20, in addition to the late Reach Out Worldwide founder Paul Walker, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, whose hit song “Same Love” is credited with spurring "a national conversation about marriage equality and the hip-hop community".
