Switched at Birth - Season 3 Episode 3 - Recap - Fountain
ABC Family's Switched at Birth is an odd hit for them, a straightforward teen drama among a whole line-up of straightforward teen dramas. The third season has me barely remembering the eponymous plot, and I'm okay with that. Continuing from last week, Emmett confronts the tire-slashing vandal, another deaf student at Carlton named Matthew. Matthew says he's trying to get rid of the hearing kids by making them looks bad, which is a terrible idea. Will Emmett turn in his pal, or let the flawed plan play out.
Bay is applying to colleges. She needs a letter of recommendation and asks her new art teacher for one. The art teacher, Teresa, invites Bay to help her with a showing a few hours away. Bay invites Tank to help out, too. Unfortunately, the show is the same time as her first game warming the bench for Carlton's new field hockey team. Bay chooses the art show and Toby angrily removes her from the roster. The art team gets to the venue, where the curator doesn't want to show Teresa's new piece. Teresa's the typical jaded, washed up artist archetype, and she's not exactly encouraging to Bay's art dreams. Bay gets the letter of recommendation, but says she'd rather let the work stand on its own. Teacher convinces her to send it anyway.
Daphne starts her penance for losing the one-on-one basketball match to her new teammate Sharee. The rides to school are not going to be easy. Daphne tries to be bright and nice, but Sharee is shutting her out hardcore. The team has their first game coming up soon and a lot of work to do getting good together beforehand. They're still kinda shaky, but nicer. It's all for naught when the school decides to do a locker search to catch a lead into the tire-slashing mystery. A box cutter turns up in Sharee's locker, but she can't be the vandal since Daphne was with her all morning and also because we know Matthew is actually the vandal. Daphne manages to get Sharee's expulsion over-turned, and gets her back on the field hockey team. The two are still at each other's throats, coming to blows and getting suspended. Field hockey's got to forfeit, disappointing Toby a great deal. Daphne ends up with everyone mad at her.
Regina is trying to impress a dude who found her digging through the trash for scrap metal, so she's showing off designs. He invites her to fly to Denver with him the next day and she agrees. When she gets there, he's all set to keep her for two to three months. She turns it down and he is really mean to her about it. The next day, he shows up to apologize, offering Regina flowers and some local work. He recognizes her talent and really wants to work with her!
Kathryn's feeling stressed that Toby wants to move out. He's looking around for apartments, so she offers to help. Thing is, he signs a lease contract without her input. It all ties into her sadness that's been running through this season, and Toby's growing independence. He's a married man and a grown adult who wants to take care of his own life! He makes things right with Mom and there's a touching moment between them. I liked this little plot, even though it didn't get much camera time. The tire-slasher plot got lots of camera time, and yes, Emmett does turn in Matthew at the end. I'm curious to see if Carlton will once again unify despite the newly diversified student body, or if a civil war will tear them apart! Check out the preview for this episode below!
