Switched at Birth - Season 3 Episode 1 - Recap - Drowning Girl
Switched at Birth - Season 3 Episode 1 - Recap - Drowning Girl
ABC Family's Switched at Birth is finally back and I am so freakin' excited! This family drama of long-past hospital mix-ups and incidental deafness is so dense with plots and character, but so good and easily watchable. If you're not caught up, you should hit Netflix right away! If you are caught up, check out my recap and then contribute to the comment section!
We haven't lost much time since last we left Switched at Birth. Summer is over and the school year is beginning. Carlton School for the Deaf has become the haven for discipline problems and underachieving students, all of whom are hearing kids. Part of the school district's conditions for reopening the school after Daphne's big protest last year was to fill the school halfway up with hearing kids. There's immediate conflict, with the new kids being misbehaved (one of them slashes Daphne's tires) and the school even installing security checkpoints. Daphne gains a new rival, probably for the whole season, in the form of a transfer student named Sharee. I'm excited to see how this all plays out!
With the cuts at Cartlon, Bay has no art outlet. She's starting in on a community college art class, full of bearded hipsters and bumbling frat boys. She's got a partner in dumb frat boy Tank, a seemingly-unmotivated jolly pledge. She ends up with no art partner, as he invites her over to the frat house to do the homework, but it's a party and he's busy doing pledge chores. Mary Beth comes over to help distract Bay with a good, old-fashioned boy hunt. Bay gets too drinky and kisses a bad boy, requiring rescuing by Tank. She barfs and is fine, but then has a bunch of tears feelings about Ty. She doesn't know he lied about cheating on her, so she's all messed up about him still. Poor Bay... :(
Mama Bear Kathryn Kennish (Lea Thompson) is going through some serious mental stress with her family all falling apart or growing up, so she's secretly seeing a psychiatrist. On the way to fill a prescription from the shrink, she spots a dance studio and is convinced to sign up for classes. She makes a new friend, a flamboyant dancer who convinces her to blow off responsibility and come hang out. Kathryn lies to get out of a fancy dinner with her husband John, setting off what I'm sure will be a chain reaction of deceit!
Daphne starts her penance for her blackmail last season, doing community service work at the free clinic. There, she meets the wheelchair-bound Campbell (played by former Breaking Bad breakfast master RJ Mitte), who rescues her from a mean doctor. Campbell, slick and charming, gives Daphne a ride home in his Camaro (meth money??) and the two connect instantly. Aside from that, Daphne is also looking to start up the Carlton basketball team, and she's getting help from the bored Toby (he's out of school and his wife is off at college, remember?), who offers to coach.
Regina's boss is moving away and selling... well, she's selling Regina's job. Bay suggests that Regina buy the place, which I think is a good idea. I mean, that's gotta be what happens, why else bring it up? Anyway, yeah, she asks Angelo for financial help, and after a fight/apology, he agrees to it. That's the smallest plot in the episode, which overall was pretty good! Check out the preview below, and please leave a comment!
