Switched At Birth – Season 2 Episode 8 – Recap – Tight Rope Walker

The recap of Switched At Birth – Season 2 Episode 8 – “Tight Rope Walker”:

The second season of Switched At Birth is already better than all of Season 1 combined. For this recap, I’ll do the same thing I did last week—I will break down the individual storylines for ya.

On Emmett being jealous of Travis’ student/teacher relationship with Melody: At the beginning of the episode, Melody (Marlee Matlin) asked Travis (Ryan Lane) to meet with a recruiter of Gallaudet University and Emmett (Sean Berdy) received detention for walking into school an hour late. Melody had an appointment to attend earlier that morning, so she wasn’t able to wake him up. When Emmett spotted Melody and Travis speaking from afar, Emmett questioned whether Travis has a magic touch with mothers. Daphne (Katie LeClerc) told Emmett to give Travis a break because he’s been having a difficult time/sleeping at the car wash. Finally, Emmett asked Melody if Travis could stay at their place for the foreseeable future. Emmett’s jealousy has converted into sympathy.

On Daphne having to choose sides between Melody’s school board meeting and Kathryn’s rehearsal for the upcoming Shakespearean play: Since Amy dropped out of the play, Kathryn (Lea Thompson) asked Daphne to cover for Amy. Daphne was now playing Juliet, and Noah (Max Lloyd-Jones) was playing Romeo. Noah has been spending more time with Daphne than with Bay due to last-minute rehearsals. (Daphne knew more about Noah’s family than Bay did; you’ll read more about that in the following section…)

Melody, however, dropped by rehearsals to inform Kathryn & Daphne about the school board meeting at Carlton School for the Deaf. The school board wanted to enroll 50 more hearing students for the upcoming school year, but Melody didn’t want that to happen. Then, Kathryn and Melody engaged in a heated argument about the possibility of more hearing students attending Carlton.

Melody and Kathryn arguing

In order to attend this important school board meeting, Daphne decided to skip out on Kathryn’s rehearsal. Later that evening, she let Kathryn know that the school board ultimately decided to shut down Carlton altogether.

On Toby ending his fling with Patricia Sawyer’s daughter, Alisa: Toby’s (Lucas Grabeel) fling with Alisa carried over into the first half of tonight’s episode. John (D.W. Moffett) didn’t understand why Toby hooked up with his opponent’s daughter, Alisa. Toby—albeit delusional—said that Alisa truly liked him and that she wasn’t trying to spy on John’s campaign. Later in the episode, Toby realized that he wasn’t interested in Alisa at all… and that he was still in love with Nikki (Cassi Thomson). Then, Nikki gave him a second chance. “Tokki” forever!

Toby and Nikki getting back together

On Bay, Daphne, and Noah meeting Zane for dinner: Regina (Constance Marie) invited her new boyfriend Zane over to her place. She also invited Bay & Noah to dinner, so Bay used this opportunity to grill Regina.

Bay, Noah, and Daphne name-checked Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, and Scotty McCreery during dinner. We also found out that Noah is Canadian! (Daphne knew about that, but Bay didn’t).

The dinner

After the dinner, Zane headed back to the club. Bay (Vanessa Marano) followed him to the club to let him know that Regina is an alcoholic. Understandably so, he had no idea that she was a recovering alcoholic. Later in the episode, Regina came storming into Bay’s bedroom to berate her about the conversation she had with Zane. This is what Regina had to say to Bay:

“Who the hell do you think you are? You don’t know me. Stay out of my business, okay? Stay out of it.”

After realizing what she said to Bay, Regina went back into Bay’s bedroom to apologize. Regina promised to attend AA meetings again.

Also: due to Noah’s Meniere’s disease, he started wearing hearing aids tonight.
