Switched At Birth – Season 2 Episode 4 – Recap – Dressing For A Charade

Switched At Birth is improving with each episode! Not only has the storyline improved, the acting has dramatically improved as well! In particular, John (D.W. Moffet) has been using more sign language (in four episodes of Season 2) than all of Season 1 combined. This is truly one of ABC Family’s best series, and I don’t believe it will be cancelled anytime soon.

This episode started off with John and Kathryn Kennish (Lea Thompson) reading the details of Toby’s (Lucas Grabeel) credit card bill. When they saw a $400 charge for a pre-natal ultrasound, they initially thought that Toby impregnated Nikki (Cassi Thomson), but Toby let them know that the ultrasound was for Lana (Annie Ilonzeh)—the woman who’s carrying Angelo’s (Gilles Marini) baby. He also let John & Kathryn know that he invited Lana over for dinner.

Daphne (Katie Leclerc) ran into Travis’s (Ryan Lane) mother, and asked her about their situation at home. His mother told Daphne that she’s not kicking him out of the house… he’s actually threatening to move out on his own. He’s also been getting into fights with his father and brother. I think Travis and his mother are definitely playing a game of “He said, She said” because Travis told Daphne not to believe what his mother says. Also: He doesn’t believe that he could repair his relationship with his family because the issue is more than his mother, father, and brother not knowing ASL. Later in the episode, Daphne told Bay (Vanessa Marano) about everything that happened to Travis. Then, Bay said to Daphne, “Are you sure you’re not into the ‘deaf Matt Damon’? I just want to let you know that you’re more into him than you think.” Looking back on this episode, I definitely agree with Bay that Travis looks like a young Matt Damon! They don’t look like identical twins, but they definitely do look a bit alike.

Ivan—John’s campaign representative—came over to the Kennish’s house to further discuss John running for State Senate. It turns out his competition made videos of John & Kathryn wanting non-Americans to live the “American dream,” but his competition only wants Americans to live the “American dream.” Ivan also found an old college video of Kathryn stating that she would like to legalize marijuana… but Kathryn mentioned that the debate took place a long time ago, so her views are no longer relevant and valid.

Bay is still really upset with Angelo because he didn’t tell her that he got another woman pregnant. She even wanted to sell the gift he gave her because she was so upset… but ultimately, she decided to keep it. Also: Bay told Angelo to his face that he’s a “disappointment.” He defended himself stating that he could’ve gone to Italy, but stayed in the States to spend time with her.

In order to de-stress from all the drama that was going on, Kathryn and Regina (Constance Marie) went to a bar together. Regina ran into an old friend of hers named Zayn/Zain/Zane (he used to flirt with her about 15 years ago). He asked her if she’s still with Angelo, but she denied it. She met up with Zayn again the next day at the bar… he was part of the band that was performing. It looks like they’ll become a couple in a future episode… I wonder if Zayn will become a regular guest-star next season?

Lana came by the Kennish’s home, and boy was it awkward! Toby told Lana that Bay really wanted to meet her, and then Toby told Bay, John, & Kathryn that Lana really wants to meet them. It turns out neither of those two aforementioned statements were true. Lana is still going to give the baby up for adoption, and Angelo isn’t happy about that. She also came by the house at the most inopportune time because Julian from Immigration’s Customs Enforcement dropped by to further investigate Regina & Angelo’s relationship. John & Kathryn used ASL to speak ‘in code’ with one another whilst they were saying entirely different things to Julian. I love that John & Kathryn are fluent in ASL now… it has kind of morphed into their ‘morse code’!

Lana

Julian wanted to know if Regina had moved out of the house. (If not, she would go to jail). John signed to Kathryn “Do something,” but told Julian an entirely different thing: that Regina had already moved out of the house a long time ago. Then, Kathryn texted Daphne to ‘remove all of Regina’s belongings from the bedroom.’ As soon as Regina was about to leave the premises, she found out that a car was blocking her car. (Not knowing that the car belonged to Julian, she walked in on his conversation with Kathryn & John. She told Julian that she was just visiting her two daughters: Bay & Daphne).

Julian

Luckily, Travis dropped by Regina & Daphne’s home earlier in the episode, so he was able to help Daphne pile all of Regina’s belongings onto the blanket. However, they didn’t have any time left to hide the stuff. Just when they thought that they didn’t have any options left, Travis pretended to be a resident of the house when Julian stopped by. He stripped off all his clothing, wrapped a towel around his waist… and told Julian that he just got out of the shower.

Travis actually spoke a bit during this episode! When Julian opened the bedroom door, this is how the conversation went down:
Travis: “What the hell???” – verbal

Julian: “You live here now?”

Travis: “No, I just like to walk around in a towel in other people’s places. What do you think? – ASL (Daphne interpreted to Julian)

Julian: “So sorry about that”

Travis: “I’m going to get back to my shower.” – ASL

Travis is a really quick thinker! He’s very intelligent. I don’t think I would’ve been able to think of something like that, right off the bat.

Travis

Toby and Lana met Julian, thereafter. They weren’t aware of who Julian was, so Lana asked Regina if they had met before. But, Regina was obviously trying to hint to Lana to not say anything about their prior encounter in front of Julian. Unfortunately, Lana doesn’t understand ASL, and she didn’t understand the hints that Regina was trying to give her…. so she’s like, “No! We did meet in that elevator!” Ugh, I extremely dislike her character. I find her character extremely annoying, and I just want her to GTFO. Sorry. It’s just unfortunate that the actress was given this sort of character. Regina basically told Julian that she wasn’t proud of her husband—Angelo—having this “affair,” but she and Angelo are figuring out how to deal with this. Regina’s story finally made Julian leave the premises. I’m glad Regina’s not going to jail! The show just wouldn’t be the same if she did…

At the end of the episode, Daphne thanked Travis for saving Regina… and then they shared a passionate kiss.
Travis: “You know I’d do anything for you.”

Daphne: “I know.”

Travis: “You like how I looked in a towel, didn’t you?”

Daphne: “No…. maybe a little bit.”

Daphne and Travis

Travis & Daphne are so cute together! He’s a much better guy for Daphne than Chef Jeff is.
