Here’s the recap for Switched At Birth – Season 2 Episode 2 – “The Awakening Conscience”:

At the beginning of the episode, Bay (Vanessa Marano) asked John (D.W. Moffett) & Kathryn (Lea Thompson) for permission to attend Carlton School for the Deaf because she felt like she never fit in at Buckner Hall. John was a little reluctant to do so, but Kathryn agreed. When she arrived at Carlton, the powers that be enrolled Bay in a pilot program with a fellow hearing student named Teo. Both Bay and Teo were having difficulty understanding the teacher’s sign language in class, and it all went downhill from there. One of their classmates, Natalie, began bullying them—especially Bay—because she felt like she had to “accommodate” towards Bay & Teo because they are hearing. Natalie called Bay “yaya,” which is code for stupid, and she also bullied Bay during volleyball and in the hallways. Ultimately, Natalie said to Bay, “You will never belong here [at Carlton].” I believe that in the past, a couple hearing students bullied Natalie for being deaf… and this is her way of getting back at a hearing student.

I predict we’ll see Bay back at Buckner Hall in no time. I know that she might want to stick it out at Carlton for a few more weeks to avoid hearing the “I told you so” from John… but her return to Buckner is inevitable. I also think that she is a great signer. In retrospect, she’s only had several months to learn ASL.

Angelo (Gilles Marini) told Regina (Constance Marie) that he impregnated Lana—a medical student he had a one-night stand with. Regina deliberately ran into Lana in an elevator, but made sure not to reveal her true identity. It turns out Lana is carrying a girl, and is 6 ½ months pregnant with Angelo’s baby. Regina later told Bay about this situation, but Bay already knew about that. Then, Regina told Kathryn, Kathryn told John, and then it snowballed from there. All three parents agreed upon Angelo being a sex addict.

Angelo tried to talk his way back into Regina’s heart:
Angelo: “You and me, we have everything.”

Regina: “And yet, you threw it all away.”

John is running for State Senate. I hope John wins the vote!

Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Nikki (Cassi Thomson) became an official couple in this episode! After a long make-out session, Kathryn came in the room and started jamming with Nikki. (Btw, Kathryn and Nikki’s voice blend so well together. They harmonize very well). Later in the episode, Toby asked Nikki why she wouldn’t sleep with him, and she mentioned that she just wants to wait for the guy that she will spend the rest of her life with. Also: Emmett was browsing through the band’s website, and he found a topless picture of Nikki in the comments section. He showed this picture to Toby, and then Toby & Nikki fought over this. Nikki mentioned that she was dealing with the death of her father at the time this picture was taken.

I think they’re a cute couple! Toby & Nikki match great (looks-wise).

Toby & Nikki

Daphne (Katie Leclerc) spent the majority of this episode selling food from her food truck. John allowed her to park her food truck at his car washing business. She didn’t perform half-badly at all! In fact, she made $253 on her first day selling tacos. She and John also drove the food truck over to East Riverside to help the hungry. Since people in East Riverside (Daphne’s previous neighborhood) were going to bed hungry at night, she didn’t put a price on the tacos. Instead, she just gave the residents a “Pay What You Can” Taco deal. She even gave out a few tacos for free! Travis (Ryan Lane) inspired Daphne to conduct this “pay what you can” deal because he wasn’t able to afford one of her mango-papaya shrimp tacos. He only had a PB & J sandwich in his backpack.

One of the kids at East Riverside wanted Daphne to get out of “his neighborhood” so he cut the food truck’s electricity wires. He didn’t appreciate a “rich girl” coming to the “poor neighborhood.” It seems like he forgot that Daphne used to be a resident of that neighborhood. (Btw, this guy knew Daphne back in the day).

I’m glad that Daphne gave back to the community! It was an amazing scene to watch.
