Switched At Birth - Episode 29 - Recap - The Trial

In Episode 29 of Switched At Birth, “The Trial,” Melody finds out about Chef Jeff & Daphne’s relationship, Bay borrows money from Simone in order to return the cash she stole from John’s safe, Daphne reveals that she isn’t a virgin, the Kennish & Vasquez families go to trial, and Toby, Nikki, & Emmett form a band together. Last week, Bay (Vanessa Marano) stole money from John’s (D.W. Moffett) safe in order to bail Zarra (Tania Raymonde) out of jail (because she got in a fight with SMAK). Since Bay asked Travis (Ryan Lane) to open John’s safe, he put his job on the line for her. In tonight’s episode, Bay only had about $270 with her... so she held a fake fundraiser at Buckner Hall to “raise money for a Halloween party.” Simone (Maiara Walsh) offered to help Bay with the rest of the money. Bay declined this offer at first because she hasn’t forgiven Simone yet for sleeping with Emmett, but she realized that Simone’s cash would be her quickest way of getting out of the financial mess she put herself in.

Chef Jeff (Justin Bruening) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) went on a date in front of a taco truck. Daphne ordered tacos, whilst Chef Jeff ordered fried grasshoppers. Daphne was reluctant to try the grasshoppers at first glance, but Jeff managed to convince her to try at least one. She enjoyed them... until the moment she threw up at Jeff’s house. Melody also dropped by Jeff’s house to pick up her sunglasses, but she left immediately after seeing two spoons in the bowl filled with gelato. (She didn’t see Daphne at Jeff’s house because Daphne was in the bathroom throwing up, but Melody did spot Daphne’s car).

Later in the episode, Daphne revealed to Bay that if she hadn’t vomited, she would’ve slept with Jeff. Bay naturally assumed that this would have been Daphne’s “first time”; however, Daphne revealed another secret: she’s had sex before. Bay was shocked at the fact because she’s a virgin herself (and also because she and Emmett hadn’t slept together before). Did Daphne ever sleep with Wilke (Austin Butler)? Does anyone recall that happening? I wonder who it was?

Melody (Marlee Matlin) confronted Daphne about her and Chef Jeff’s relationship. Melody opened up about once dating her college professor who was 15 years older than she was.... she didn’t fit in with his friends, and he didn’t fit in with hers. She mentioned that being able to get along with your partner’s friends & family is paramount in a romantic relationship. She begged Daphne to end this relationship with her boss, but Daphne took this as an act of jealousy. (Daphne thought Melody was jealous that Jeff chose her over Melody). Daphne went over to Jeff’s house at the end of the episode.... and they slept together. I wonder if Daphne will be pregnant in Season 2? If they follow The Secret Life’s plot.... Jeff will probably end up as the father of Daphne’s potential child.

Toby & Emmett reconciled their differences in the previous episode.... so they agreed to play music together again. Toby (Lucas Grabeel) introduced Nikki (Cassi Thomson) to Emmett (Sean Berdy); and, the three of them jammed together. They also took their first official photo as a band.... Nikki basically replaced Wilke. However, on the following day, Nikki told Toby that she can’t play music with him anymore because her long-distance boyfriend saw the photo she took of herself, Toby, and Emmett. But with some assistance from Emmett, Toby was able to re-convince Nikki that he will not break up her and her boyfriend’s relationship, and that he and Nikki only have a working relationship right now.

In court, Kathryn (Lea Thompson) met another woman who had her child switched at birth. Her daughter, Tiffany, was switched with the other daughter, also named Tiffany, for 9 days. Kathryn was taken aback by this because she still doesn’t understand how she didn’t know that Bay wasn’t her biological daughter. (9 days is such a short amount of time as opposed to 16 years). This woman’s daughter was switched at birth (at the same hospital) 3 months before Bay & Daphne were born. The Kennish’s lawyer, Craig (Samuel Page), used this piece of information as evidence for use against the hospital. Angelo (Gilles Marini) also revealed that he regretted leaving Regina (Constance Marie) & Daphne for 13 years; he also mentioned that he left because he thought Regina had cheated on him. This trial will resume in the following episode....

Bay confessed to Kathryn that she stole money from John’s safe, and Kathryn told John about this after the trial. John and Bay got into a huge argument about her being friends with Zarra. At the end of the episode, Bay ran away from home and she will now be staying in Zarra’s RV for the time being. Bay also stated that if she hadn’t been switched at birth, she would probably be living Zarra’s life. (That is one of the reasons why she’s maintaining their friendship.... despite all of the drama that her friendship with Zarra is causing).
