There was so much going on in tonight’s episode!
The love triangle between Melody-Chef Jeff-Daphne no longer exists. Chef Jeff (Justin Bruening) ended his affair with Melody (Marlee Matlin), and made out with Daphne (Katie LeClerc) again before working hours. Daphne’s co-worker Scuba (Manish Dayal) realized there was something going on between her and Chef Jeff.... so Scuba asked her to cover for his mistake instead. (He overcooked the shrimp, so he asked Daphne to take the blame since Chef Jeff wouldn’t ever fire her). Chef Jeff realized that Daphne was covering for Scuba, so Scuba was fired. In return, Scuba told all of his co-workers about Chef Jeff and Daphne’s relationship.

At the church where Nikki (Cassi Thomson) and Toby (Lucas Grabeel) met, Nikki invited Toby to the upcoming Battle of the Bands gig. Toby declined her invitation, but instead asked her to hang out at a local guitar store (where she received a call from her long-distance boyfriend). Toby was gutted that Nikki already has a boyfriend because he was starting to develop feelings for her. Later, she revealed that a man shot and killed her dad; however, she decided to let go of this tragedy because it was eating her up inside... and she didn’t want her anger to win.

Kathryn (Lea Thompson) invited Bay’s ex-boyfriend Alex (Mat Vairo), Alex’s parents, and Regina (Constance Marie) & Patrick (Christopher Wiehl) over for dinner. This was Kathryn’s way of passively trying to tell Bay not be friends with people like Zarra. (Kathryn and Daphne both met Zarra in this episode). Patrick also broke up with Regina during the dinner party because he realized that she is still in love with Angelo (Gilles Marini). The dinner party got even more awkward when Bay (Vanessa Marano) received a call from Zarra (Tania Raymonde).

SMAK—the guy who slashed Bay & Zarra’s artwork in the previous episode—jumped Zarra (this fight landed her in county jail). She didn’t have anyone else to turn to, so she asked Bay to secretly bail her out of jail. The bail-out unfortunately cost Bay $1,500 big ones ($300 of her own money, and $1,200 from her dad’s safe). Bay used Alex as a cover story to leave the dinner party by saying that she was “going out to grab some gelato with Alex.” Bay & Alex snuck into John’s (D.W. Moffett) office to steal money from the safe. They found Travis sleeping on the couch inside the office.... he’s been sleeping at work because he doesn’t have a good relationship with his family. (Travis’ family haven’t learned A.S.L).

Toby decided to forgive Emmett (Sean Berdy) for sleeping with Simone (Maiara Walsh) because he was inspired by Nikki’s ability to forgive the man that shot her father. Toby thought that if Nikki could forgive someone for doing something so awful... he can forgive Emmett for having sex with his girlfriend. Toby and Emmett started off anew, became friends again, and agreed to make music together again.

As the season moves forward, the episodes seem to get more and more crowded with unnecessary filler (i.e. Regina and Patrick’s break-up, and Bay’s ex-boyfriend Alex). I hope the writers focus more on the core family unit (the Kennish family and the Vasquez family), instead of bringing in expendable characters to fill in the time gap.
The next episode airs Monday, 10/15, at 8pm ET on ABC Family.
